First Assistant Prosecutor, Mercer County New Jersey, Accomplished, Conscientious Government Executive

National Night Out 2024 Robbinsville and Trenton I had a great time last night at Robbinsville and Trenton's (re-scheduled) National Night Out. It is always great to interact with our community in a light-hearted atmosphere and I am especially appreciative of this office's participation.

  • The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office lost a cherished member of our family this week. Retired Captain Matt Norton, 49, peacefully passed away Sunday, July 28, 2024, at Memorial Sloan Kettering in Manhattan, NY, surrounded by his beloved family and close friends. Born in Trenton, Matt was raised in Hamilton by his doting mother, Marge Norton, along with his two sisters. Matt was a graduate of Steinert High School and was a proud firefighter of the Mercerville Fire Co. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from the University of New Haven. Matt proudly started his decorated law enforcement career as a detective with the NY/NJ Waterfront Commission Police Department. In 2000, he joined the prosecutor’s office as a detective, climbing the ranks to become captain. Matt retired December 31, 2023, after 25 years of service. He was known for his dedication, integrity and his great acuity for solving difficult cases. His passion for justice and his duty to service were unmatched. But underneath his Blue armor, Matt had a magnetic personality, easily making friends everywhere he went. With his infectious smile and incredible sense of humor, Matt quickly bonded with people. But no bond was stronger than family. He was a dedicated husband and family man, extremely proud of his wife, Jackie, and their 5 children, and treasured time with them. He especially enjoyed their many travel adventures. Matt will always be remembered for his dedication to MCPO and to the profession of law enforcement.

  • Today marks the end of an era at the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office. Prosecutor Angelo Onofri dedicated almost three decades of service to our office, leading us the last nine and a half years as prosecutor. During his career, he worked tirelessly to uphold the law, reduce violent crime, foster community relationships, encourage the youth population, educate residents, advocate for victims and protect the rights of all individuals. Your contributions to law enforcement and the legal system, and your commitment and love for Mercer County, will have a lasting impact. Congratulations, Prosecutor! We wish you nothing but the best! We would be remiss if we did not thank everyone who took the time to mark this momentous occasion with our office. County prosecutors, legislators, the law enforcement community, state, county and local representatives, elected officials, colleagues, friends and family traveled from all across the state to share this moment with Prosecutor Onofri and it is deeply appreciated.
