Our Childbirth Center would like to extend a thank you to Maleah Lee. Maleah competes in the Miss America Organization, which is a pageant program that gives out scholarship dollars for women to pursue their education. She has competed since she was thirteen years old and her platform is all about literacy and education and making sure it is implemented early in a child's life. Through her platform, she was able to start a non-profit, "A Bundle of Books for Your Bundle of Joy". This program donates a bundle of books to newborn parents in hospitals to make sure that reading is being implemented early in life. Thank you Maleah!

While temperatures soar during the summer, so does the need for blood donations. The summertime can also lead to fewer people donating. The supply can't always meet demand because only about 3% of eligible donors give blood. Unfortunately, the need for blood doesn't take a summer break - please consider signing up to donate blood this summer to help those in need. Mercer Health recently hosted three local college students as part of its annual Medical Staff Summer Internship & Exploration Program. This program is offered each summer for college students who are considering applying for medical school. Three students were accepted into the program for 2024, and began their first day in the program on Monday, June 3. This year’s interns included: Morgan Guggenbiller, from Maria Stein, attending Bowling Green State University; Leah Eichler, from Rockford, attending the University of Pittsburgh; and Meghan Wiss, from Minster, attending Bowling Green State University. “The summer internship and exploration program offered me valuable insights to the different types of doctors practicing in our rural area. I am grateful for the experience, advice and knowledge the physicians provided as I apply to medical schools,” states Guggenbiller. These students worked directly with a variety of Mercer Health providers, both in the hospital and outpatient settings, where our providers shared their experiences and the lifestyle of a physician. The goal of this internship program is to help students make informed decisions about applying for medical school. Thank you to the Mercer County Civic Foundation for the grant donation of $16,000 to the MED Foundation at Mercer Health. The funds were put towards the purchase of a GlideScope laryngoscope.
