First satellite launched by an independent NGO. Our mission: Measuring methane emissions to protect our climate.
About us
MethaneSAT is the most advanced methane tracker in space. By end of 2024, it will measure emissions almost anywhere on Earth with greater precision than any other satellite - from large leaks to sources too small for other satellites to see. Its initial mission is to quantify methane coming from the global oil & gas industry. MethaneSAT data will be free and publicly available to catalyze faster action by countries and companies to fix problems faster and more effectively. With high precision measurement capabilities and a wide view path, MethaneSAT will track not only the rate at which methane is being emitted and from where, but how those emissions are changing – making it easier to prioritize solutions for maximum benefit. It will quantify emission rates from the global level on down to sites as small as one kilometer.

Excited for another step forward in the methane data revolution as Carbon Mapper counts down to launch! 🛰 Carbon Mapper will detect methane emissions from point sources as low as 100 kg CH4 per hour, marking a tenfold improvement over current satellites ➡ This advancement will significantly improve our ability to monitor emissions with exceptional detail. Methane emissions vary widely in release rates, spanning from small to large: 🔺 Carbon Mapper will contribute to understanding this continuum of methane emissions. 🔺 It will complement other point source mappers and upcoming area mappers like MethaneSAT, which is currently in orbit. ➡ Together, these technologies will offer comprehensive global tracking of methane emissions. 🛰️ UN Environment Programme's IMEO will integrate this data into its Methane Alert and Response System, which delivers data directly to governments and companies, empowering them to respond to significant emission events and take action to #CutMethane. We're taking the stage today at the #BBGGreenFestival 🌱🎤 If you're attending, join our Steve Hamburg, Senior Vice President & Chief Scientist, Environmental Defense Fund and MethaneSAT Project Lead at 3:25 ET in Seattle, or online shortly after here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gywQgxTa
Methane emitters beware: You can’t hide from this eye in the sky. The Environmental Defense Fund's MethaneSAT project is in orbit, spotting methane leaks from the oil and gas industry and ushering in a new era of climate transparency. We speak with Dr. Steven Hamburg at the #BBGGreenFestival July 11th. Learn more here! http://bloom.bg/3znj5qm

A new study quantifies one of the largest methane leaks ever recorded, which occurred last year at a remote well in Kazakhstan: 🔺 The emissions event began 9 June 2023 and lasted at least 205 days. Scientists estimate it released up to 165,000 tonnes of methane. In the near-term, that amount of methane has the same climate impact as 2.9 million cars driven for a year. 🚗 🔺 The leak was first detected by scientists at Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research, IMEO and Kayrros. IMEO observed the emissions as part of the Methane Alert and Response System, which uses satellite data to notify governments and companies of emissions. 🔺 The study illustrates how a diverse array of methane-sensitive satellites can be combined to reconstruct and quantify emissions from sustained leaks. 🌍 The new era of methane monitoring from space, boosted by international initiatives such as the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) of the UNEP and new methane satellite missions such as MethaneSAT and Carbon Mapper, will be crucial for the detection and quantification of large methane leaks around the world. 🔎 UNEP’s IMEO exists to make this methane data actionable so governments and companies can #CutMethane at scale.
