Our staff writer, Naomi Feinstein, reflects on her impactful experiences during her time here. "At New Times, I investigated the fatal shooting of Osvaldo Cueli, a father of two and a grandfather of three young children, at his Redland farm by the Miami-Dade Police Department. Through interviews with Cueli’s two children and a review of cellphone footage from the immediate aftermath of the shooting, I helped capture what allegedly unfolded on that November day when Cueli was gunned down by police. My story provided a glimpse into the life of the hard-working 59-year-old and loving family man. I was able to give a voice to Cueli’s two children who allege their father was killed despite never pulling a gun. Investigative reporting like this is why Miami New Times is an asset to the community. We help to uncover the truth, hold our local officials accountable, and provide a voice to the voiceless." 3 days left to support local news❗ Since its founding in 1987, Miami New Times has become a cultural touchstone in South Florida. We’ve evolved a lot over the years, but our mission for our news coverage remains strong: to publish compelling stories ignored or overlooked by major media, including unflinching exposés about Miami's steamy political climate. We often hear from our readers that you want to see more reporting about politics and the election. It’s clear that the time is right to bolster our efforts in this area, which is why we are crowdfunding. Consider contributing at miaminewtimes.com/support

One of Miami's most prized barbecue spots, which has daily lines out the door for its coffee-rubbed ribs and juicy brisket, has secretly just launched a smash burger pop-up. Apocalypse BBQ has just opened a new smash burger pop-up called Lala's Burgers & Fries, where it will transform its restaurant into a smash burger paradise once a week. The smash burger pop-up, which made its debut on Tuesday, August 20, will take place at Apocalypse BBQ at 9980 SW 104th St. every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The pop-up launched with three smash burgers, french fries, and a chocolate chip cookie. According to Burger Beast, Lala's Burgers & Fries is a work in progress. Therefore, he expects the menu to evolve and grow over the next few weeks. 🍔 Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/esCztmwB

In city after city, Swift has been greeted by thousands of fans without tickets singing along outside stadiums, and thousands more watching livestreams of the concerts via TikTok each night. Swifties view the shows as pilgrimages rather than run-of-the-mill concerts, and travel and hospitality companies are meeting the demand with personalized Swift-themed experiences. Last month, Southwest Airlines announced it will add flights to accommodate fans traveling to Miami for the Eras Tour, while Brightline will partner with iHeartRadio for sing-along train rides from Orlando to Miami. Hotels are also getting in on the action with elaborate Swiftie packages and events, with perks ranging from Swift-themed welcome amenities to friendship bracelet-making activities and even private car transfers to the shows. Ready for it? Check into one of these hotels when Swift returns to "Florida!!!" for the Eras Tour this fall. ⬇

As the venue approaches its first anniversary, its commitment to catering to the cultural needs of locals remains unchanged. In an act of generosity unheard of on birthdays, ZeyZey will host a free concert this weekend featuring Puerto Rican bomba-fusion band El Laberinto del Coco out of sheer gratitude for how the 305 has shown up for the venue in the past year. Mainstays Wolf Tacos and beverage consultant Esther Merino's craft cocktails are set to keep the good eats rolling and pour one out in ZeyZey's name. "We made it a free show as a thank you to Miami," emphasizes cofounder Josh Hackler. "This is a really amazing band, and they would otherwise be pretty pricey, but we're really doing this as a gift to the Miami community." When compared to Live Nation-operated venues like the Fillmore Miami Beach and FPL Solar Amphitheater, ZeyZey has fared unusually well for a venue aimed at filling a hefty and largely abandoned gap in the city's music scene. Cofounder and head of production Anthony Hall's vision for the venue was to create an all-ages space that was inexpensive (a lofty goal anywhere in Miami) and homey — think all the house parties you've loved rolled into a 15,000-square-foot backyard outfitted with a happy hour hub, arena-quality sound system, and disco. But ZeyZey's music programming, a motley of underground and alternative artists that mirrors locals' playlists more than the Top 40, sets it apart. "People generally say, 'I've been waiting for something like this in Miami, it's so overdue,'" Hall shares. "We try and keep our finger on the pulse of what our friends and peers are listening to and try to bring them." Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/ei--Kjvj

World-renowned Chef Massimo Bottura will open his first restaurant in the United States, Torno Subito Miami, on Wednesday, August 21, in downtown Miami. “I didn’t choose Miami, Miami chose me!” says Chef Bottura with enthusiasm. “The last time I was there, I found an amazing energy. I feel it’s the place to be right now!” The place to be is right. Torno Subito Miami is perched atop downtown Miami’s culinary and entertainment hotspot, Julia & Henry’s, which opened in June 2023. The Italian restaurant will open in partnership with King Goose Hospitality. Widely regarded as one of the world’s best chefs, Chef Bottura has entrusted Bernardo Paladini of Torno Subito Dubai, which just received its inaugural Michelin star, to lead Torno Subito Miami as Head Chef. “We all share a passion for the Italian Riviera’s retro dolce vita mood with Fellini’s dreamlike qualities, but each project is also the mirror of the chefs,” says Bottura. “Bernardo has been in Miami for a year and a half, and in that time he has deepened his knowledge of the cheesemakers, farmers, ranchers, and fishermen of the South Florida area. We fully support him to express himself under a creative hat that is Osteria Francescana and our Francescana Family.” Read the full story below 📰 : https://lnkd.in/ehPCg55C

As we all collectively bake in the scorching South Florida heat, you're probably thinking you don't need another study telling you how hot it is. Still, Climate Central, a nonprofit group that researches and reports on Earth's changing climate and how it affects our lives, would like a word. Scientists at Climate Central developed a measurement called the Urban Heat Island (UHI) index, which expresses in degrees Fahrenheit the extent to which the built environment — from population density to urban infrastructure to vehicle traffic, tree cover, and concrete surfaces — increases ambient temperatures. Then, they used data from the 2020 U.S. Census to apply the index to 65 cities nationwide, including Miami. Climate Central estimated that 85,000 of Miami's 450,000 residents — nearly 20 percent — experience temperatures at least nine degrees higher than inhabitants of less-urban areas. Parts of the Silver Bluff Estates neighborhood off Coral Way experience an air-temperature increase of 13 degrees on the high end, while other areas feel only a 6.8-degree bump. View the areas where the highest concentrations of census blocks with a UHI index of ten degrees or more are located:

Finally, Miami's beloved family-run ice cream shop with locations in Kendall and Coral Gables is expanding to the delight of those who live further north in Miami. SWEET MELODY CRAFTED ICE CREAM, LLC, the beloved ice cream shop that's home to "Kooki Monster" ice cream, is opening its third Miami location on Friday, August 16, at the Citadel in Little River near Miami Shores. The first 50 guests on opening day will receive a scoop for only $1 each. Sweet Melody is the latest addition to the Citadel, which features 13 other vendors including Pho Sho, Borti, Ash Pizza Parlor, Manjai, the Shores, and its most recent addition, Stanzione Pizza. The ice cream shop was founded by Mike Romeu in 2016 when he started making ice cream in his kitchen with the help of friends and family who served as taste testers and supporters. Named after his daughter, Sweet Melody soon expanded and was seen on menus of local restaurants and even Miami stadiums. Check out the full scoop 🍨 below
