Michael Baker International’s work on the Harmon Street Extension Project for the Town of Lexington, South Carolina, won the Public Works Project of the Year Award from the American Public Works Association (APWA) South Carolina Chapter. Michael Baker served as the Engineer for this project, providing services including project management, stakeholder and agency coordination, oversight of field surveys and geotechnical investigation, utility coordination, environmental documentation and permitting, preliminary and final design, right-of-way services, bidding-phase support, and construction engineering and inspection. The completed project has increased traffic efficiency and safety in the corridor by improving traffic operations, rerouting traffic off a residential street and fixing a poorly aligned intersection. Additional benefits of the project include sidewalk connectivity, aesthetic traffic signals, landscaping, lighting and a new, publicly owned recreational pond. Congratulations to the project team for this honor! #ProjectAward #APWA #PublicWorks

  • The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) was recently awarded a $7.4 million Buses & Bus Facilities grant from the U.S. Federal Transit Administration (FTA) as a result of a Transit Asset Management Facility Condition Assessment Plan completed by Michael Baker International. The grant will be used for the rehabilitation of the 102-year-old maintenance and office building located at 265 Melrose Street in Providence. Built in 1922, the Melrose Street facility has served as a cornerstone of RIPTA’s operations for decades. However, the building has faced substantial deterioration over the years, necessitating urgent repairs and upgrades. The phase one rehabilitation and modernization project will focus on critical improvements, including repairing the building shell to eliminate water vulnerabilities, upgrading the HVAC system and completing asbestos abatement. These efforts will prevent further deterioration, ensuring the building remains structurally sound and safe for future use. #ProjectUpdate #RIPTA #BuildingRehabilitation #HistoricPreservation

  • The State Road (SR) 25 Savannah River Bridge replacement project in Chatham County, Georgia, reached a significant milestone when the new bridge opened to traffic in July 2024. The existing Savannah River Bridge was considered functionally and structurally obsolete. The team worked to construct the new bridge parallel to and upstream from the existing bridge structure. Construction began in November 2022 and is part of a larger project that includes the replacement of the SR 25 bridge over Middle River, which is scheduled to be completed in spring 2025. The new Savannah River Bridge improves traffic safety; includes structural and foundational improvements to carry current truck loads, protect against hurricane storm surge and increase earthquake resiliency; and provides increased waterway clearance, eliminating the need for a swing span. • On May 11, 2021, inspectors from Michael Baker International discovered a fracture in the Hernando de Soto Bridge during a routine inspection. This bridge is crucial for transportation, commerce, and defense, carrying about 60,000 vehicles daily. The inspectors immediately contacted local authorities to shut down all traffic for safety. A three-phase emergency repair plan was implemented. Phase 1 involved temporary stabilization plating and was completed by May 25, 2021. Phase 2 used post-tensioning and bolting repairs, finishing by July 3, 2021. Phase 3 addressed additional defects and was completed by July 31, 2021. All lanes were reopened by August 2, 2021. This year marks the three-year anniversary of the bridge's reopening. • The Magnolia Municipal (Ralph C Weiser Field) Airport is a general aviation facility located three miles southeast of Magnolia in Columbia County, Arkansas. The airport covers 272 acres and sees more than 10,000 aircraft operations annually. The runway’s condition had deteriorated, and surveys revealed significant portions had lateral grades that were not in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements. To address these issues, Michael Baker International performed the design for the asphalt overlay of Runway 18-36 and the associated Runway Safety Area Evaluation as required by the FAA. The team designed an approach that utilized a variable-depth grooved overlay to correct the grading issues and provide a consistent lateral grade. Michael Baker also provided the bidding and construction administration/inspection services for the construction project, which was completed in 2022. The final project corrected all existing pavement grading deficiencies and constructed a new asphalt surface course on the runway.
