    Happy National Aviation Day to the members of the MSP Aviation Unit! 🚁 Our Aviation Unit works closely with police departments across the state, the Michigan National Guard and the United States Coast Guard to provide services such as search and rescue, traffic enforcement patrol and thermal imaging. So far this year, they have completed more than 720 missions.     Please join us in congratulating Sgt. Scott Tuttle of the Enforcement Career Development Section who was awarded the International Association of Chiefs of Police's (IACP) 2024 Instructor of the Year Award! Sergeant Tuttle led a comprehensive statewide training program for a new breath alcohol testing device, training approximately 15,000 law enforcement officers across the state. The award was presented at the 2024 IACP State & Provincial Police Planning Officers Section and Academy Directors Section annual meeting in Vermont earlier this month.

    On Wednesday, Aug. 7, we honored several members of the Michigan State Police at our Employee Recognition Ceremony! Members were recognized for their recent promotions, years of service and special recognition awards. Among the special recognition awards were the department's meritorious service and bravery and lifesaving awards recipients: D/Sgt. Anthony Utt, assigned to the Alpena Post, received the Meritorious Service Award for his extreme dedication and perseverance managing and solving a complex and high-profile case involving the disappearance and homicides of two young women in Alpena County. Ms. Elizabeth Wandrei, assigned to the Intelligence Operations Division - Third District, received the Meritorious Service Award for her professionalism, diligence, and perseverance during a complex homicide investigation in Lapeer County dating back to 2011. Tprs Myles Redmond and Emily Spoeri, assigned to the Flint Post, and Sgt. Louis Velaga, previously assigned to the Flint Post and now assigned to the Intelligence Operations Division, received the Bravery and Lifesaving awards for their heroic actions during a critical incident involving a house fire.     Congratulations to D/Lt. Taylor Bonovetz and D/Tpr. Spencer Proefrock of the MSP Fraud Investigation West Unit for receiving Meijer's Law Enforcement Lifetime Partner Award! Detective Lieutenant Taylor Bonovetz was awarded for his impactful contributions over the past decade in reducing and prosecuting organized retail crime. Detective Trooper Spencer Proefrock received the award for his unwavering passion and dedication to solving complex cases. Among the cases they worked was a large-scale mPerks theft case, saving the company over $1,000,000 in corporate losses. Thank you D/Lt. Bonovetz and D/Tpr.     The CRIT Initiative held the first Bureau of Justice Assistance sponsored Crisis Response and Intervention Training (CRIT) Train-the-Trainer course hosted by Michigan State Police. The 3-day training prepared 30 police officers, behavioral health practitioners, and other partners from 9 agencies to deliver CRIT to their local agency and community. CRIT is a 40-hour training program designed to prepare police officers in their response to people experiencing crises related to behavioral health conditions (including mental health conditions and substance use disorders) and intellectual and developmental disabilities. CRIT is designed to complement the development and delivery of crisis response programs planned by police agencies, behavioral health services providers, and disability service providers in the community.
