The Mississippi Hospital Association Board of Governors today announced that Richard Roberson, JD, will become the association's new President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Richard becomes only the fourth CEO to lead the MHA in its 100-year history.

It has been 19 years since Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Mississippi. We will always remember the lives that were lost, the help that arrived, the lasting impact it had on this state, and the tough lessons we learned so that we can safeguard Mississippi and its citizens from future disasters.

The Office of Health Equity is pleased to announce the release of a new funding opportunity aimed at advancing health equity throughout the state of Mississippi. Healthy Communities depend on a culture where everyone has the power to achieve optimal health. The Office of Health Equity invites Mississippi-based partners to submit innovative programming addressing structural factors known as social drivers of health (SDOH) to promote health equity and improve the overall well-being of individuals and communities. The aim of the funding is to improve health outcomes by tackling the non-medical factors that influence health, such as economic stability, education access, healthcare access, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context. The Mississippi State Department of Health supports initiatives that are proactive in the pursuit of population health and well-being.    KEY DETAILS Applicants must demonstrate experience and capacity to address SDOH and must have a strong connection to the target community.  All proposals are expected to incorporate interventions that contribute to a sustained and multifaceted approach to overcoming health disparities. Richard Roberson, the incoming president and CEO of the Mississippi Hospital Association, believes it is unlikely that removing certificate of need requirements will incentivize investment in areas of the state with the highest need for new healthcare services. “What I suspect is you’re going to see an overproliferation of services in more commercially insured areas,” he said. “And if you’re talking about folks coming in and investing money, that’s where they’re going to put it, where they can make their money back.”
