FEB. 4, 2023: Sandra Sterling, the aunt who raised Alton Sterling, comforts the father of Jaylin McKenzie while speaking with people protesting the killing of Tyre Nichols. Sterling was killed at 37 by the Baton Rouge, La. police in 2016, spurring protests and an investigation by the U.S. Justice Department. McKenzie was 20 years old and visiting Memphis from Atlanta when he was killed by the police in December 2022. The protest occupied the intersection of Danny Thomas Boulevard and Poplar Avenue on a Saturday morning and, for 12 hours, made it a space for healing. It was the late great Audre Lorde who said, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” That’s a guiding idea at MLK50: Justice Through Journalism. We know that to do the work we need to do, we have to take care of ourselves as we care for the community. Next week, we’ll do that by taking a break from publishing from Aug. 26 through Sept. 2. We will return to form on Sept. 3. During our downtime, our social media will be silent, and no stories will be published on our website.
