The cannabis industry needs to be paying very close attention. It's essential to partner with a laboratory that delivers accurate, reproducible, and legally defensible data, rather than one that either lacks the expertise or willingly manipulates results for short-term benefits. Such practices lead to long-term disappointment. At Modern Canna Laboratories, we've emphasized for years that the costs associated with product recalls, lawsuits, or reputational damage far outweigh the expense of discarding a contaminated production batch. To all the legacy cannabis cultivators - your expertise is not in question; however, regulatory standards have significantly evolved and vary by state. Ensure you partner with a testing lab that prioritizes long-term integrity and protection. This is and has always been our top priority. #QualityAssurance #DataIntegrity #CannabisCompliance #RiskMitigation

The ideal moisture content for cured and dried cannabis that is sold to consumers has always been communicated as 10% - 14%. However, upon entering the industry 8 years ago, I immediately started to question this, especially when I saw the methodology that was primarily used for determining this moisture value. Over the last several years, our laboratory, Modern Canna Laboratories, has been planning a massive study to compare multiple moisture techniques to better understand the TRUE water content in cannabis. AND the results are finally in! After analyzing 120 unique dried and cured cannabis samples via five different techniques and looking at the cannabinoid and terpene content of a subset of those samples before and after drying to understand the volatile and semi-volatile loss that occurs, our laboratory can confidently say that the ideal moisture content for cannabis has been artificially inflated by additional loss that occurs during the laboratory drying process. As such, the industry needs to move away from the traditional Loss on Drying at a High Temperature (LoDH) and move towards other techniques like Karl Fischer (KF), Loss on Drying at a Low Temperature (LoDL), or Vacuum Oven (VO) with a properly validated method to accurately determine the moisture content for the cannabis flower products that are on the market. So, if you see your cannabis products being labeled with a moisture content above 10%, start questioning those results and begin investigating the methods that laboratories are using to determine the value. Together, we as an industry can change the landscape for this type of testing so that producers, cultivators, and consumers alike are provided with the most accurate data possible about their products. Without challenging the current knowledge, no industry, cannabis included, can move forward and improve and that was a major goal of this experiment. If you want to learn more about this study, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Since entering the cannabis industry, moisture testing and the "ideal moisture" content for cannabis flower has been a major pain point for our laboratory. Coming from an environmental background, we understood the impact that utilizing loss on drying at a high temperature (103C) could have on the accuracy of the moisture values obtained when a product has high concentrations of volatile and semi-volatile compounds. However, persuading the industry that this method is skewing moisture values has not been an easy task. I am very excited to be presenting our completed moisture study at multiple conferences in hopes that we will be able to gain further traction for recommending a more accurate method that helps ensure the loss of terpenes and decarboxylation of cannabinoids is minimized.

We welcome CannMed 24 speaker, Jini Glaros, Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) at Modern Canna Laboratories in Lakeland, FL. She received her bachelor’s degree with honors in Biochemistry from the University of West Florida. In May of 2022, Jini earned a master’s degree in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. In her presentation, she will discuss “Moisture Analysis for Cannabis Flower – Understanding Water Content” At #CannMed24. The cannabis industry has come to recognize a moisture content of 10% -14% as the ideal range for cannabis flower. However, this range may be inaccurate due to deficiencies associated with the method that has become the industry standard for calculating these values. Cannabis material contains a high concentration of volatile and semi-volatile compounds which may cause moisture results to be skewed abnormally high when a traditional loss on drying (LoD) technique is used. As such, our laboratory conducted a study where several different moisture determination techniques were utilized, to compare moisture values. The Florida Supreme Court approved a recreational marijuana constitutional amendment for the November 2024 statewide ballot. The proposal, known as Amendment 3, will legalize the “non-medical personal use of marijuana products and marijuana accessories by an adult” 21 or older if approved by 60% or more of statewide voters. Five judges ruled favorably on the measure while two opposed. #YesOn3

🚨New Blog Alert🚨 "Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (d9-THC) is a federally illegal Schedule I drug, however, one of its isomeric sisters, Δ8-tetrahydrocannabinol (d8-THC), is not. With this, many questions arise about why one of these compounds receives so much scrutiny from the federal government and the other does not. Throughout this blog, we will delve into those nuances to help provide a more clear understanding of the legality, chemical composition, and the pharmacological properties of these two similar, yet different compounds."
