Denver is brimming with unique spaces and places, ones that most people only get to see from the outside or briefly when passing by. But the annual Doors Open Denver event allows fans of architecture and design to explore both historic and future-forward projects with a range of activities. This year’s Doors Open Denver, hosted by Denver Architecture Foundation, features tours of buildings like the Mayan Theater and the Sudler, open houses at 15 Denver architecture firms and historically important buildings, and parties. The event runs from Thursday, Sept. 26 through Sunday, the 29th. Modern In Denver Magazine
Book and Periodical Publishing
Colorado's Trusted Architecture, Art and Design Publication
About us
Modern In Denver is Colorado's leading design magazine celebrating commercial and residential architecture, art, interiors, and our creative community! We celebrate modern design and living in Colorado. But we balk at the walls of limitation that a title constructs! We’re much more than a magazine. MID is also a platform for discussing and exploring outside-the-box ways of living that are inspired by modern design and practices. And just what is modern? Well, we heard an ugly rumor that modern design connotes a cold and sterile environment. That particular brand of modern certainly may exist. But we’re friends with the type that greets you at the door with your house slippers and an honest mix of materials and methods. Modern can be comfortable, and we’re here to show you how. We think good design can be an integral part of real life right here in Denver. In fact, we’ve seen it. And we want to tell you about it. We find it important to connect the designs we feature to the particulars of our place, our community, and the people in it. This makes it real, practical and possible for great modern design to become part of your life.

Game nights are a great way to bring loved ones together—even if they can get a little competitive. The owners of the Cherry Creek home built by Boulder-based Surround Architecture just happen to have the best space for a standing game of cribbage, or a cocktail with friends: a hidden speakeasy in the basement. Built behind a pair of weighted bookcases and able to seat up to 16 people, it is inspired by C.S. Lewis’ beloved Narnia stories and features plush materials. Architect Diébédo Francis Kéré explored the concept of the kitchen as the contemporary world’s modern source of fire in a circular pavilion created for the Salone del Mobile.Milano 2024, the international furniture fair held annually in Milan, Italy. Made from spruce logs for German kitchen brand next125 Munich, the “archaic” shelter featured arched, cave-like openings that lead to a space lit by seemingly haphazard bundled wood in various lengths and diameters. This beautiful lighting wonderfully showcased Next125’s cabinetry and created a feeling of warmth and welcome that only a kitchen can provide. Kéré’s design is one of the many features from Salone del Mobile highlighted in Modern in Denver’s summer issue. The exhibit, which features around 2,000 AI- generated text-to-image pictures, is a partnership with The University of Texas at Austin professors Kory Bieg, Daniel Koehler, and clay odom, and explores the many ways artificial intelligence programs could impact architecture. New York’s Post Company clearly knows its way around a hotel. As the company demonstrated by collaborating with CCY Architects on Aspen’s Mollie Hotel, Post knows how to create spaces that are innovative, yet warm and welcoming. They’ve recently brought their unique approach to Escape Hospitality’s The Rounds at Scribner’s in Hunter, New York, where they were tasked with creating a more intimate, residential experience. Inspired by European hut systems and hand-hewn shingled traditions of the Catskills, the guest buildings revolve around a centralized amenity lodge and feature plenty of mid-century touches. It seems like there’s always an exciting creative project going on in Marfa, Texas, and the latest building effort might be the most innovative yet. West Texas hospitality entrepreneur Liz Lambert, who opened the popular El Cosmico hotel and campground in 2009, is launching a new development called Sunday Homes that will feature the first 3D-printed hotel in the world and private residences available for purchase. Made from lavacrete, a proprietary mud and concrete material, and developed with BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group, it presents an exciting way forward for the construction industry. As part of Modern in Denver’s trip to Marfa, we learned about the project and much more. Architect Walter S. White is one of those people who made a tremendous impact on the Colorado landscape but hasn’t received the recognition his contributions warrant. He worked primarily in the Colorado Springs area, bringing his environmentally-conscious approach and beautiful aesthetic sense to numerous projects in the city. He worked on private residences as well as the redesign of the Living Hope Church. By embracing the power of the sun and taking an innovative approach to structure design, White created buildings that remain as striking today as when they were first built. Updating a Victorian house and a duplex addition in Aspen’s West End was never going to be a simple project, especially when the new owners from Highland Park, Texas, had to follow the guidelines laid down by the city’s Historic Preservation Commission. To take on the challenge, they turned to CCY Architects (who recently worked on the renovation of the Mollie Hotel) and together employed a musical theme that adds a playful creative cohesion to both structures. “It’s so harmonically tuned,” said the owners. “It’s a masterpiece.” Check out the following link to see how musical notes and other elements are woven into the buildings: https://lnkd.in/g9ffSXrc Words: Sara Webster Photos: Draper White Architecture: CCY Architects Interiors: Cheryl Troxel Structural Engineers: KL&A Engineers and Builders Civil Engineering: Roaring Fork Engineering Lighting Consultant: Oldner Lighting, LLC + David Electric Kitchens: bulthaup Landscape: BlueGreen Landscape Architects Staircase Craftsmen: Living Design Studios . . . #modernindenver #magazine #aspen #ccyarchitects
