Happy birthday to Colonel Jack Jacobs, who earned the #MedalofHonor on this day in 1968 in the Kien Phong Province, Vietnam, during the Vietnam War. While serving as an advisor with the 9th Division of the Army of the Republic of South Vietnam, Jacobs calmly directed airstrikes on well-entrenched enemy positions that took his advancing unit under attack. Col. Jacobs – though injured himself – repeatedly ran across open rice paddies through heavy fire to evacuate the wounded, personally saving the company commander and twelve other allied soldiers. On this day in 1945, Corporal Melvin Mayfield earned the #MedalofHonor while serving with the 6th Infantry Division in the Cordillera Mountain range, on the island of Luzon, in the Philippines. When he saw two companies of Filipino allies pinned down by enemy fire, Mayfield bravely stormed and destroyed Japanese emplacements in nearby caves with his rifle and hand grenades, despite a severe injury. In doing so, he rescued his allies and helped destroy enemy resistance. Mayfield’s action was chronologically the last action to earn a Medal of Honor in #WWII. Happy birthday to Master Sergeant Leroy Petry, who turns 45 today! He earned the #MedalofHonor in Afghanistan when he risked his life and lost his right hand while throwing an enemy grenade away from his fellow Army Rangers as it detonated. Then-Lieutenant Willis Winter Bradley Jr. earned the #MedalofHonor on this day in 1917. A dedicated Naval Academy graduate, who was then serving as gunnery officer on the armored cruiser USS Pittsburgh, Bradley was entering a casemate on the ship when ammunition inside accidentally exploded, knocking him unconscious. When he awakened, he crawled into the burning casemate and extinguished the burning ammunition, which was next to a large amount of powder that, if touched off, could have destroyed the ship. Bradley received the Medal of Honor for this action, and his daughter, Sue, later married World War II Medal of Honor recipient Bruce McCandless! It’s hard to read Staff Sergeant Chester Sims’ story of sacrifice in the jungles of Vietnam and not be left in awe.
