I know it may come as a surprise, but my best meditation practices are done in the most unusual places. I learned how to meditate from Nina Smiley Director of Mindfulness Programming at Mohonk Mountain House many years ago when I first started doing their PR. It was liberating to learn that I can meditate Anytime and Anyplace. And all I have to do is count my breath, in and out, in and out. Just the awareness of my breath brings me to a place of peace and comfort. It is powerful, yet so simple. I use this technique of focusing on my breath at night, when my mind won’t shut off and the next thing I know it’s the morning! And I used it to scale the Shawangunk Mountains on the resort’s new Via Ferrata this past May. Every step on the metal rung, every clip onto the steel cable, every grab of the next handle or crevasse became a moment to breathe - to let everything else go from my head except for my breath and the rock. I’m a huge fan of Nina’s work and her book, The Three Minute Meditator, which teaches you how you can meditate and create peace while literally doing anything.
