This year, the Preserve has partnered with the Student Conservation Association to employ SCA members to support our research, land protection, education and stewardship programs. Our SCA members proposed and were selected as leaders for the SCA Hudson Valley AmeriCorps’ 2024 Patriot's Day Service project, bringing together 47 members from the region to rehabilitate the Millbrook Mountain Trail connecting the Preserve and Minnewaska State Park Preserve. Our primary goal is to improve and reroute a stretch of Millbrook Mountain Trail. The footpath has severely degraded in certain areas. Consequently, hikers are creating numerous social trails, pushing the edges of the trail out into the forest. It is our hope to make the trail safer and more sustainable. Millbrook Mountain footpath is part of a larger loop that accesses Gertrude’s Nose, one of Minnewaska’s most popular trails. It also serves as a connecting path between Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska properties. Patriot Day is a day where we remember & honor the victims, survivors, and first responders who gave their lives to save others during the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001. In honor of Patriot Day, thousands across the nation create lasting impacts in their communities through volunteerism and community service. Thank you to our Stewardship staff, volunteers and to all the SCA members for their dedicated trail work! New York's largest nonprofit nature preserve
About us
Mohonk Preserve protects the northern Shawangunk Ridge and inspires people to care for, enjoy and explore the natural world. In partnership with our members, supporters, and volunteers, we protect and manage over 8,000 acres of mountain ridges, forests, fields, streams, ponds, and other unique and beautiful places. As New York's largest nonprofit nature preserve, each year we welcome over 200,000 visitors. The Preserve's devoted volunteers, dedicated donors, and expert staff all work in harmony for a common cause - to create a place where people and nature thrive. To accomplish our goal of protecting one of the region's most treasured and beautiful places, we conduct programs in four key areas - environmental education, conservation programs, stewardship, and visitor experience. At the Preserve, you can enjoy scenic beauty, outdoor activities, and peace and quiet, all just 90 miles from New York City. Our carriage roads and trails are perfect for hiking, running, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. We're also the home of "Gunks" climbing and bouldering, and one of the most visited climbing destinations in North America. By visiting Mohonk Preserve, becoming a member, or making a donation, you help ensure that generations to come will be able to enjoy this special place.

On Friday, August 30, 2024 we had very special visitors on Lenape Lane – four juvenile rehabilitated peregrine falcons! “As a preferred natural area for peregrine falcons to breed, the Shawangunk Ridge has been a favored choice for Chris to release rehabilitated peregrines for many years. The Mohonk Preserve values our partnership with Chris and the NYC DEP and will continue to prioritize the conservation of this extraordinary bird species.” - Megan Napoli, Mohonk Preserve Associate Director of Conservation Science & Research The peregrine falcons were successfully rehabilitated by The Raptor Trust of Millington, NJ and released by Christopher Nadareski, Section Chief of the Wildlife Studies Section of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYS DEP). The Raptor Trust provided medical evaluation and rehabilitation of the falcons along with appropriate flight training to prepare for their release. We wish these peregrines the best of luck on their new journey and hope they choose to settle in the Gunks or other cliff areas of New York! Video by Bill Winter

What do you know about climate change? Join former National Center for Atmospheric Research presenter and Imago communications facilitator Richard Ordway on Saturday, September 14 at 10am for a presentation about the science of climate change and the effects of our carbon footprint. Afterward, there will be an interactive dialogue process led by Richard and assisted by his wife, Bonnie Hirschhorn, a practicing licensed psychotherapist and Imago relationship therapist. The purpose of the dialogue process is to learn interactive communication tools to share with and learn from others how we affect global warming and in return how global warming affects our lives. We will learn tools to have safe conversations about topics that are difficult and how to have safe conversations with others who come from different backgrounds and may have differing views. This presentation and dialogue process can teach us a lot about global warming, ourselves and the world at large. Space is limited and registration is required. Register through our online portal: https://lnkd.in/ewB3R4ZG This program is part of the Hudson Valley Climate Solutions Week.
