Check out the new monarch caterpillar exhibit at the Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center! 🐛🦋 Stop by the children's corner, located on the bottom floor, to get a closer look at life cycles of these fascinating creatures! During the caterpillar stage, monarchs do a lot of growing. They begin life by eating their eggshell, and then move on to the plant on which they were laid. As a caterpillar, the monarch will have 5 growth spurts known as instars. Once the caterpillar reaches it's maximum size, the monarch will begin to cocoon to prepare for it's transformation from larva to adult butterfly. The Visitor Center is open daily from 9am - 5pm. “We’re proud to be awarded Leave No Trace’s Gold Standard designation for implementation of Leave No Trace ethics and strong organizational commitment to outdoor stewardship,” said Mohonk Preserve President and CEO Kevin Case. “We are honored to represent New York and join a select group of sites nationwide in support of Leave No Trace’s mission of ensuring a sustainable future for the outdoors and the planet.” On Saturday, August 17th at the Mohonk Preserve’s Testimonial Gateway Trailhead, Leave No Trace announced the Preserve’s designation as a Leave No Trace Gold Standard Site. This is the highest standard of recognition which honors sites that are exemplary models of Leave No Trace ethics to help preserve and protect our natural landscapes. Mohonk Preserve joins a prestigious group of sites to earn this honor and is the first to achieve the designation in New York State! The event was attended by representatives from area land trusts, environmental organizations, community groups and government officials. Students from the local Woodcrest Schools kicked off the festivities with forest and hiking-related songs and to wrap up the celebration, Mohonk Preserve Research Director Emeritus Paul Huth led attendees on a curated walk along the Preserve’s beautiful Pin Oak Allee. Summer camp is in full swing at Mohonk Preserve! Our Camp Peregrine campers have been busy hiking and exploring the ridge in search of the creatures that call Mohonk Preserve home! Together with Mohonk Preserve Educators, we searched for butterflies and dragonflies in the fields, scooped for invertebrates in the stream, search for signs of squirrels and deer in the forest, listen for frog calls in the pond, and look for birds in every habitat. Do you have a passion for creativity and LEGO? The Newburgh Creates printmaking program offers a unique and innovative experience by utilizing custom-designed and built presses specifically crafted for printing with LEGO bricks. Participants in this program can explore the intersection of art and technology through hands-on printmaking activities using LEGO elements as printing tools. Get inspired by the natural patterns on the Shawangunk Ridge and create intricate and detailed prints by arranging LEGO bricks in various configurations to form patterns and designs. The possibilities are endless! No prior experience is necessary. All ages are welcome to join in on the creative process. Children must always be accompanied by an adult.
