Last year, this powerful project by VICE News claimed the Motion Award in the "News > Title Sequence" category, celebrating a standout single spot that used striking motion design to promote a news program for television or streaming. The opening title sequence of “Beyond Fentanyl” — a gripping documentary or news report — employed abstract and evocative imagery to symbolize the evolving opioid crisis in the United States. The sequence began with mesmerizing, seemingly benign visuals, reflecting the allure and initial high of drug use. But as it unfolded, the imagery transformed, symbolizing the insidious grip of addiction. Dissolving colors provided a fleeting sense of euphoria before the sequence plunged into darker territory, evoking nausea and trepidation, capturing the destructive spiral of prolonged addiction. Ultimately, it underscored the cyclical toxicity of addiction and its devastating impact on individuals and communities. “Beyond Fentanyl” aimed to spotlight the heightened danger posed by synthetic drugs mixed with fentanyl, a combination responsible for over 100,000 overdose deaths in the United States in 2021 — the deadliest year on record. Here's some good for your middle of the week! Mellow Studio, winners of the Motion Award last year in the “Infographics > Social Good” category, was happy to work with ActionAid again on a film celebrating their 50-year anniversary! The brief was to bring awareness to the impact ActionAid had in its efforts to aid and facilitate growth in communities of need. Mellow Studio aimed to focus on the positive effects an NGO could have on a community, showing the audience the impact their contributions could have. Mellow Studio took the audience on a 50-year journey of a young girl taking hold of her own story, growing up to be a leader for change and inspiring others to follow in her place. By examining different snapshots of her life, Mellow Studio aimed to inspire viewers to understand the connection that education, equality and teamwork have in society. Happy Monday, folks! Here’s a sporty one to pump you up for the start of the week: AE Live's Ignite was the winner of last year's Motion Award in the “Sports > Graphic Package” category for their work on the United Rugby Championship Package. This category is all about creating a system of motion graphic elements designed to present information within a sports program for television or streaming. Ignite is proud to have developed a cutting-edge Motion Design system that elevates the viewing experience for rugby fans around the world. Their Motion Design for this "next generation" rugby competition followed two main directives: to contemporize the offering and evoke the fast pace of the game. The central principle was to make the URC logo the origin point and active 'navigator' for the entire graphics system. The logo was placed at the center of all templates and given attributes that drew the eye to splitting and growing information panels across the screen. Dynamic motion graphics were integrated with a 'street' design aesthetic, creating a groundbreaking package that set a new standard for match graphics internationally. Expressive player photography was aligned with a carefully considered hierarchy of information and high-speed statistic delivery, ensuring every design decision supported and amplified the drama of each live game. The unique design housed real-time graphics and live data feeds of match play information, enhancing the viewing experience for every fan. Happy Monday, Motionogrphers! Wanyi Ma createdthe title sequence for the student film "I’m not ok," which won the Motion Award last year for the category, “Student > Title Sequence”. The film explores the conflict between a controlling mother and her daughter, with the mother demanding that her daughter meets her expectations in every way. Wanyi used the concept of puppet theater to illustrate this dynamic, portraying the mother as the controller and the daughter as the puppet. As the puppet attempts to escape the manipulator's control, it ends up broken. The visual style of the title sequence reflects this conflict, evoking a "horror fairy tale" with its blend of dark and beautiful elements. Inspired by Wanyi’s award-winning work? What an emotionally moving short film about growth!  Growth is created by making uncomfortable decisions. Decisions that are scary at the time, but incredibly necessary. When presented with the choice between change and familiarity, most will choose the latter, despite knowing that this decision causes suffering and distress. This is Ouroboros. Ouroboros, directed by Steven Dvornik, won the Motion Award last year for “Student > Open” Format. This project was Steven's senior thesis during his last year at Ringling College of Art and Design. In this work, Steven experimented with a system to transfer the style of 2D digital painting to 3D. Each shot was meticulously painted over by hand, with the total production time spanning four months. Inspired by Steven’s award-winning work? If you’ve got a Motion Design project that fits this category — or any of the 37 categories across 15 disciplines — consider submitting it to the 2024 Motion Awards (link in comments)!
