As the Olympic Games in Paris close and the torch is passed to LA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games and the City of Los Angeles, we have been talking with the community about what a “car-free” Los Angeles could look like and how we achieve it in four years. Our idea for a “Festival Trail” has been featured in Dwell thanks to Alissa Walker, Chris Torres, RLA, and Hilary Norton. We want to connect the entire region with a 22-mile non-vehicular linear park for biking, walking, and taking public transit. We were in Washington, D.C. for the U.S. Department of Transportation release of the Report to Congress on Decarbonizing U.S. Transportation. This is a must-read if you care about our climate crisis and believe that public transportation is the answer. Emissions from the Transportation Sector are the largest proportion of total emissions, and this is one of the first reports that makes it clear that SUVs--the most popular vehicle sold in America--are the largest source of those emissions (light-duty vehicles account for nearly 50% of Transportation Emissions). The report also points to the ever-increasing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from trucking, a major source of cancer-causing pollution that impacts environmental justice communities along our goods movement corridors. This is why Move LA fights for public transportation and zero-emission goods movement. What an honor to spend the day with U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg who announced nearly $80 million for Los Angeles Metro for zero-emission buses--one of the largest awards in the country. Move LA fights for better, more frequent and reliable bus service and that includes funding to reduce emissions from the largest bus fleet in the United States!
