    Tom is sharing his 4 key take-aways after listening to Progressive and Travelers earnings calls. All Personal Lines companies pay attention. 🔔 🔷Strong Growth in New Business at Progressive: Progressive's emphasis on growth is reflected in the 34% increase in personal auto new business applications in the second quarter of 2024. This expansion is supported by a substantial rise in advertising spend and adjustments to rate restrictions aimed at enhancing profitability. 🔷Advertising Investment as a Growth Driver: Progressive’s nearly 150% increase in advertising spend, amounting to $1.6 billion year-to-date, underscores their aggressive strategy to capture market share. This significant investment is KEY to driving new business and maintaining competitiveness in the marketplace. 🔷Rate Adjustments and Stabilizing Auto Loss Trends: Progressive reported an 8% decrease in personal auto accident frequency with stabilizing severity trends.This, combined with small rate decreases in eight personal auto states during the second quarter, positions them to sustain profitability amidst market fluctuations. 🔷Challenges in Property Lines and Catastrophic Claim Severity: Both Progressive and Travelers are experiencing challenges in their Property lines, particularly due to increased catastrophic claim severity. Travelers' Property YTD Combined Ratio of 109.1% with 35.5% attributed to CAT losses. This highlights the impact of severe weather events and other catastrophes.     Exciting news: the P&C industry has turned the corner on profitability! However, Mutuals still have challenges ahead of them. Dan Post, FCAS, MAAA shared an insightful article summarizing S&P Global Marketplace’s projection of an industry combined ratio of 99.2% in 2024. ➡️S&P GMI calculates that recent results for Mutuals have been “11.3 percentage points higher than the rest of the industry…but rate alone may be insufficient for them to overcome the depths of the challenges they face.” ➡️Going forward, S&P GMI’s outlook anticipates greater market-share concentration among the largest private auto writers in the coming years, reasoning that “data, analytics and economies of scale remain critically important in a commoditized business.” This is MCA’s mission – to bring the data and analytics to help our clients compete!
