MWA's Branding and Graphic Design Lead, Allison P., attended the Environmental Design Research Association's Human-centered Design Conference in June. Allison returned inspired by the connection between #ExperientialGraphicDesign and Trauma Informed Design and how they benefit the well-being of our #community. Allison shares her key takeaways below: 1. #TraumaInformedDesign is an engagement tool that eliminates barriers to getting people in the door. 2. Clear, simple #signage, well-thought-out #wayfinding, and calming colors reduce stress and add to a person's ability to absorb information. 3. Staff needs may not align with resident/patient needs. We need to design a balance between the two. 4. Designers need to be creative with budgets and prioritize design elements that benefit the people using the space the most. Planning for trauma responses upfront can save money and time. Wider hallways, quality materials, flexible spaces and furniture, sound control/acoustics, and HVAC/temp control all benefit mental health.

Incredible work and progress at Terracina Vista for USA Properties Fund, Inc. and Northwest Housing Alternatives !! This project will bring 92 new affordable homes with 1, 2, and 3-bedroom units to the City of Gresham, supporting our most vulnerable community members. The incredible collaboration between USA Properties Fund, Inc., Northwest Housing Alternatives, Walsh Construction Co., MWA Architects, Inc. and project stakeholders is driving the success of Terracina Vista. This project is being built to Earth Advantage platinum standards, featuring a highly diverse workforce and incorporating Walsh's Cost-Efficient Design and Construction principles. Special shout-out to our dedicated Walsh team: Jay Nees, Charlie Silvis, Erik Johnson, and Caitlin Kelley for their hard work and commitment to meeting project goals. This project is a significant step in addressing the housing crisis in the Portland metro area. The Black Panther Design Tour with AIA East Bay Located in West Oakland, The Black Panther is a groundbreaking #affordablehousing community that supports very low-income and formerly incarcerated individuals. Working with local non-profit Oakland & the World Enterprises (OAW) and McCormack Baron Companies (MBS), MWA designed a five-story #apartmentbuilding with residential, community, and #commercialspaces. Situated just three blocks from BART, the development is a transit-oriented community with convenient access to downtown #Oakland, #SanFrancisco, and the entire #BayArea. History of The Black Panther The Black Panther is the culminated vision of Civil Rights activist and Oakland and the World Enterprise (OAW) leader Elaine Brown, who, combined with McCormack Barron Salazar (MBS), has raised $80 million for this development. About Our Tour Guide Christopher Remedios has 30 years of experience designing buildings that positively impact underserved communities. He is passionate about #multifamilyhousing and continues to explore how good quality #design can affect our lives.
