It is with great sadness that I learned today of the passing of Architectural Lighting Legend Ray Grenald on March 06, 2024. Starting his practice in 1968, Ray Grenald was one of our industries founders and a truly visionary designer. He shaped our industry into what it is today, and will be greatly missed. His legacy extends beyond his innovative designs, encompassing a profound understanding of the psychological impact of lighting on a space, employing elements such as light, shadow, and contrast to influence the occupant's perception. He was always happy to sit down with anyone to talk design and perception over lunch.
In 1979, Ray's ingenious design for Philadelphia's Boathouse Row not only preserved the landmark from potential destruction but transformed it into a beloved symbol of the city. Among his numerous contributions to both the cityscape and the industry at large, Ray's influence touched iconic landmarks such as Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Benjamin Franklin Bridge, the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and significant portions of the White House and the West Wing during the Reagan Administration. His dedication to both the art and science of architectural lighting has left an enduring legacy, and will always be remembered as an incredible designer, friend and mentor.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ray's memory may be made to IALD Education Trust (https://lnkd.in/d2u6gcvq)
