Today commemorates four years since the loss of Sarah Hegazi, an Egyptian queer feminist and rights advocate who sadly ended her life in exile following imprisonment and prolonged repression. In tribute to her memory, we share with her loved ones and the LGBTQI+ community this excerpt from the poem "No Blood Between Us" By Ann Lee and Juana Jaafar. "There is no blood between us, But she was from my nation, From Cairo to Kuala Lumpur, As she put it, ‘the race of religiosity’, Who destroy to save; kill to cure, Corrupt to stay pure, Gain strength by meek seeking, Who devil when they justify Being closer to God, By doing the unjustifiable. There is no blood between us, But she shared my belief: ‘Whoever saves one (life), it is as if they had saved humankind entirely.’ — Al-Qur’an, 5:32 There was no blood between us, But she lives in me."

🔍 Bridging the Gap in MENA Legal Scholarship! We're proud to announce the release of a groundbreaking study "The MENA Trans Archives Series: Understanding the Judicial Directions & Practices on Legal Gender Recognition in the Middle East and North Africa Case Law". This study delves into 22 judgments across 19 cases in 10 countries, aiming to create a unified framework for legal arguments concerning transgender rights. Despite the absence of specific legislation, this research highlights how civil status courts address requests for legal gender recognition, often referencing Islamic Sharia in the absence of explicit laws. 📘 Note: This vital research is available only in English and investigates the challenging landscape where transgender rights and legal recognition intersect with cultural and religious norms. Discover how legal arguments for and against legal gender recognition are shaping the rights of transgender individuals in the MENA region.
