#NASWWIAC Workshop Spotlight: ⁠ Veterinary Social Work at Wiscares Community Veterinary Clinic: Providing Care for Low-Income and Homeless Pet Owners, Veterinary Clinic Staff, and Veterinary Students Presented by: Jennifer Wheeler Brooks, PhD, CISW (she/her), Liddy Alvarez, DVM, DABVP (Canine and Feline Practice) (she/her), and Ruthanne Chun, DVM, DACVIM (Oncology) (she/her) Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024, 9:00-10:15 a.m. 1.25 CEHs Wisconsin Companion Animal Resources, Education, and Social Services (WisCARES) is an interdisciplinary program that aims to increase access to veterinary services for low-income and homeless pet owners, provide social services to the same clientele, and offer a unique learning environment for UW students. Veterinary social work in this setting involves three distinct client groups: clinic clients, clinic staff, and veterinary students. Attendees will learn about interventions for each group and have the opportunity to participate in a reflective writing and debriefing exercise. Today marks the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. We honor those who suffered, reflect on slavery's dark past and fight against modern slavery and human trafficking. #NASW

As the summer semester ends, NASW-WI would like to thank the interns. This group worked on grants and PowerPoints and supported the Social Worker’s PAC, all in preparation for the fall elections. The interns this semester also completed a review of the most pressing social work topics and looked into the archives as we prepare to celebrate our 50th annual conference in the fall. Thank you for your hard work, Kendra, Lily, and Ariella.

#NASWWIAC Workshop Spotlight: ⁠ Invisible Sentence: Evidence Based Policy & Practice for Children Impacted by Parental Incarceration Presented by: Wendy Volz Daniels, MSW, LCSW (she/her) Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024, 2:00-4:00 p.m. 2 CEHs According to the Sentencing Project, there are 2 million people incarcerated in prisons and jails in the United States. The harm of our mass incarceration system results in many “collateral consequences” for the individual and their family including the invisible sentence that children who have a parent who is incarcerated experience. The Vera Institute estimates that over 5 million children in the United States have experienced the incarceration of a parent. Parental incarceration is considered an adverse childhood experience. Identifying these children to provide prevention, early intervention and supportive services to them and their caregivers can change their trajectory away from involvement in the juvenile justice system to one of resilience and triumph. The session will focus on parents incarcerated in state prisons. What Is Going on With the ‘It Ends With Us Controversy? In an interview with Glamour Magazine, #NASW CEO Dr. Anthony Estreet, Ph.D., MBA, LCSW-C notes that when popular media portrays intimate partner violence, it should be done with the utmost caution. “Each year, about 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are physically assaulted by an intimate partner. This is a good time to highlight how intimate partner violence can go unnoticed and is often disguised as ‘love.’” Estreet advises that marketing for the film should also include resources, like contact info for the National Domestic Violence hotline, which is included in the film’s closing credits but not on other promotional pages like its Instagram.
