NCTR partners with school districts, charter management organizations, institutions of higher education, not-for-profits, and states to launch and grow teacher residency programs to recruit and develop effective and diverse new teachers schools and districts. Our residency partners provide rigorous classroom-based training programs under the guidance of experienced, mentor teachers. Our year-long teacher preparation model ensures that new teachers enter the profession with a solid foundation of skills and are ready to teach, on day one.

Having an experienced mentor teacher guide an aspiring educator who is learning how to effectively teach and manage a class of students in real time makes a real difference in the quality preparation of teacher residents. And mentor teachers also receive the opportunity to improve their own practice. 97% of mentor teachers as part of NCTR's Network members reported to have grown into more effective leaders through their experience of guiding an aspiring educator. New research from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville provides more evidence to an existing body of research that all educators, including those in teacher training programs, benefit from the support of an instructional coach! It's research, like this, that reinforces why Ribbit Learning Company is committed to expanding access to evidence-based instructional coaching to every educator from pre-service to retirement! This study provides evidence that incorporating coaching into teacher preparation programs helps aspiring teachers improve the application of specific skills in their practice. Researchers also studied the mode of coaching (in-person or virtual) and found comparable coaching effects. Researchers found that "short, targeted, and directive coaching significantly improves candidates’ instructional performance during simulated classroom sessions and that coaching effects are robust across different teaching tasks, study timing, and modes of delivery." Directive coaching included: ℹ️ Observations of simulated teaching where the coach diagnosed the educator's instructional needs related to a specific skill. ℹ️ Self-reflection prior to the coach identifying strengths and improvement targets. ℹ️ Coach provided explicit improvements in strategy and practice for the educator to follow. ℹ️ Coach and educator engaged in role-playing these improvements which provided additional opportunities for practice. These findings should encourage colleges of education as well designers of residencies, apprenticeships and grow your own training models to integrate instructional coaching in their programs. To understand how states are experiencing teacher shortages around the country, LPI reviewed the latest state data sources to estimate the number of teachers not fully certified for their positions and the number of unfilled teaching positions reported by each state. Estimates based on recent state-level data indicate that at least 400,000 teaching positions—1 in 8 of all teaching positions nationally—were either unfilled or filled by teachers not fully certified for their assignments.
