Parents and Teachers: NIAMS has launched new online resources for kids in grades 4-6 who are interested in learning about their bones, joints, muscles, and skin. The pages include interactive Kahoot! quizzes and fun and easy hands-on activities kids can do this summer. The educational resources aim to promote principles of scientific thinking and healthy behaviors, and are aligned with national science and health education standards. https://go.nih.gov/2F59blo

An international team of researchers led by the NIAMS Intramural Research Program’s Muscle Disease Section has discovered a new mechanism through which myositis autoantibodies contribute to the disease. The researchers discovered that autoantibodies can get inside muscle cells and disrupt the normal function of certain proteins. This new discovery could have implications for how we understand not only myositis, but also other autoimmune diseases. The study, published in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, goes against the previously held belief that autoantibodies cannot enter living cells. Dr. Robert Walker, NIAMS Chief Diversity Officer, met recently with 24 graduate students from Meharry Medical College. The students from this historically black college were touring the NIH campus via their “SHort Course In transFerable skills Training” (SHIFT) program, which provides professional development to biomedical research graduate students and is funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). Dr. Walker presented to the group funding and training opportunities in NIAMS and the NIH. In addition, various discussions were centered around transitioning to postdoc fellows and early scientific careers, scientific communication, and mentoring.
