  • #NationalFireNews: As of today, July 10, the National #PreparednessLevel has increased to PL4. Significant wildland fire activity continues to increase in several Geographic Areas. The potential for additional large wildland fires to emerge based upon the forecast from Predictive Services over the next several days is high. The National Interagency Coordination Center has had to increasingly engage with Geographic Area Coordination Centers to coordinate and fill orders for all National Resource types daily. Drawdown of multiple resource types on less active Geographic Areas is occurring and will pose a challenge if existing fuel and fire weather conditions change. 📸 The #PioneerFire seen from Lake Chelan. • #NationalFireNews: July 15, 2024. 62 large active wildfires are currently being managed nationwide and have burned 902,253 acres. Fire managers are using full suppression strategies on 49 of these wildfires. 18,468 wildland firefighters and support personnel, 20 complex incident management teams, and 5 type 1 incident management teams are assigned to incidents across the nation. The Great Basin Coordination Center's predictive services staff have issued three fuels and fire behavior advisories for Nevada, Southern Idaho and Utah and Arizona Strip. There is also a fuels and fire behavior advisory in effect for California. Residents, travelers, or workers on their way to any of these states should be advised and familiarize themselves with the elevated risks. • #NationalFireNews: July 11, 2024. Wildfire activity continues to escalate due to extremely hot and dry conditions in many areas. Right now, 74 large active wildfires are being managed nationwide, and have burned 681,569 acres. Fire managers are using full suppression strategies on 33 of these wildfires. More than 14,400 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the nation. Yesterday the Great Basin Coordination Center's predictive services staff issued three fuels and fire behavior advisories for #Nevada, Southern #Idaho and #Utah and #Arizona Strip. Each advisory lists unique concerns, however, there are some commonalities. All of these areas have a lot of fine fuels and both dead and live fuels are drying rapidly due to recent record temperatures. These conditions, coupled with the hot temperatures and dry conditions, are affecting the fire behavior in these areas. There is a fuels and fire behavior advisory still in effect for #California that highlights abnormally high fine fuel loading across the state. Residents, travelers, or workers on their way to any of these states should be advised and familiarize themselves with the elevated risks. #FireYear2024 More NFN: https://lnkd.in/gTj5mZB Photo 1 on the #PioneerFire. • It's #WayBackWednesday, and it's a perfect day for an airshow! This beautiful historic image taken near the modern-day NIFC campus was not stored with any written context, but we can deduce a few things from the tail numbers on the aircraft. The plane in the air making a drop is a Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress air tanker, used widely to fight wildfires in the 1960s. This particular plane was involved in an accident in 1971, after which it retired to private collection. On the ground to the right, the plane with the tail number ending in "WN" is a Beechcraft Model 18, a light twin-engined aircraft with a broad variety of uses, including firefighting - which may explain why it was produced continuously from 1937 until 1969. We found reports online of this particular plane being certified airworthy as recently as 2014! And who are the spectators, enjoying the show in their distinctive 1960s fashions? We don't know their names, but 50-odd years later, we share their interest in seeing what firefighting aircraft can do! 📸 Photo from the NIFC Archives

#NationalFireNews: July 8, 2024. Currently, 73 large active fires are being managed nationwide, and have burned 499,192 acres. Of these, 25 wildfires are being managed under full suppression strategies. #Alaska continues to have the most activity, with 43 large fires, the majority of which are being managed with strategies other than full suppression. Over 10,000 #FirefightingResources, wildland firefighters and support personnel. are assigned to incidents nationwide. The Alaska Interagency Coordination Center's Predictive Services unit and its partners have issued a fuels and fire behavior advisory spanning from central Alaska into the northeast Interior to the border with Canada. There is also a fuels and fire behavior advisory issued for #California that highlights abnormally high fine fuel loading across the state. Residents, travelers, or workers on their ways to these states should be advised and familiarize themselves with the elevated risks. Record-breaking heat is coinciding with very low relative humidity and windy conditions across much of the Western United States, which means that accidental ignitions can spread quickly. If you live in a fire-prone area, especially if your home is adjacent to wildlands, take some steps to make your home more defensible if wildfire should come your way. ✅ Prune trees six to ten feet above the ground. ✅Remove dead leaves and branches and dispose of them. ✅Water your lawn regularly and store firewood away from the house. ✅Be prepared for a fire emergency by having a plan for your family and pets. ✅Check out the latest in home and landscape preparation at NFN: https://lnkd.in/gTj5mZB #FireYear2024 📸 Photo 1 on the #SheeringFire in CA.
