This Friday we are featuring NREL’s project: SMART-POWER Workforce and Supply Chain Analysis Analysis! 💡 We're thrilled to highlight the ongoing efforts of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in their latest project focused on advancing offshore wind energy capabilities across Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and North Carolina—the SMART-POWER states. This project demonstrates the power of state collaboration to shape long term development of offshore wind-related economic opportunities. 📊 NREL is spearheading a comprehensive regional offshore wind supply chain study aimed at shaping a strategic roadmap for these states. This initiative is crucial in identifying key opportunities and challenges within the supply chain for components such as blades, towers, and monopiles. With an emphasis on equity and workforce development, NREL aims to provide metrics on how investments in component facilities can build regional capabilities. 👷♀️ The project addresses critical issues like regional strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities in offshore wind production. It also evaluates strategic investments that could enhance workforce readiness and economic mobility, while minimizing legacy pollution. 🏗 Currently, the SMART-POWER team has made significant strides and has results for the seven supply chain and workforce metrics, including the business case, market share, risk of missed opportunity, workforce readiness, legacy pollution, barriers to economic mobility, and investment impact potential. These insights are pivotal in guiding state-level policies and investments that will shape the future of offshore wind energy in this region. The team is also sharing these results with Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and North Carolina to solicit state feedback prior to publishing the results of the regional study. 🌐 With NREL and projects like this one, we can ensure that offshore wind becomes a cornerstone of sustainable energy development while fostering inclusive economic opportunities for our communities. Please join us in welcoming Skylah Reis to our team as our new Marketing and Policy Intern! Skylah is a New Bedford native and a marine scientist. She completed her bachelor's degree in biology at Harvard University and her master's in marine science at Ghent University in Belgium. Throughout her two-year master's program in Europe, she researched the benefits of offshore wind farms on the marine environment and will start her PhD on this topic in the fall at the University of Southern California, Santa Barbara. Skylah also co-directs a young woman in STEM program called "Captain's Academy" on Nantucket Island. Skylah will work on communication, policy, and event planning for NOWRDC through December 2024.

🌟 Friday Feature: Pioneering Solutions for Offshore Wind Transmission 🌟 We are thrilled to spotlight Clarkson University's project funded by NOWRDC, addressing the Solicitation Challenge Area - Electrical and Grid Challenges Unique to Offshore Wind (OSW) Transmission. This project, titled "Atlantic Seaboard Offshore Stability Risk Evaluation & Service" is paving the way for a more reliable and resilient offshore wind energy future. 🔧 Project Highlights: Objective 1: Develop a comprehensive system-wide Electromagnetic Transients (EMT) simulation model, incorporating approximately 30GW of offshore wind and East Coast transmission grids. Objective 2: Create a robust controls stability risk evaluation methodology. This project transcends existing DOE studies by modeling unbalanced and non-fundamental frequency phenomena, and controls stability of inverter-based resources. The resulting simulation capability will form the backbone of a commercial service, empowering OSW customers to assess and mitigate controls stability risks effectively, thereby minimizing delays and cancellations due to reliability issues. 🌊 Why It Matters: Reliability: By addressing controls stability risks prior to project launch, this project ensures a smoother interconnection process for new offshore wind projects. 🚀 NOWRDC has officially launched Phase II of the Multi-State Hurricane Resilience Initiative. This project will further enhance our understanding and mitigation of hurricane risks to offshore wind energy systems. A big thank you to our research partners and state collaborators for driving innovation and resilience in offshore wind. 🌍🔬 The key takeaways of this announcement are: > Phase I of this project was able to more accurately characterize the risk posed by hurricanes, and found that the structural risk of monopile failure caused by hurricanes was lower than what is accepted by design standards. > Phase II of the project will build on Phase I by enhancing the forecasting of hurricanes and assessing potential climate effects, alternative ways in which hurricanes could cause structural risk to offshore wind, and potential hurricane impacts to grid resiliency. > This project is funded through a remarkable, collaborative partnership of multiple state governments - including the Maryland Energy Administration, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, and the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center. This Friday Feature highlights Principle Power's DeepFarm Project 🌊💨 This project is titled “Innovative Deepwater Mooring Systems for Floating Wind Farms,” also known as DeepFarm. Funded by NOWRDC, this project is a significant leap forward in the development of advanced mooring systems, crucial for reducing the overall costs of deepwater floating offshore wind farms. Why This Project Matters: The #DeepFarm initiative is pivotal for floating offshore wind. By focusing on cost-effective and innovative mooring solutions, Principle Power is addressing one of the major challenges in the deployment of floating wind farms in deep waters. This advancement has the potential to make offshore wind energy more accessible and economically viable. Project Achievements: ➡ Approval-in-Principle from ABS: The project secured an Approval-in-Principle (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its shared suction-pile anchor system, marking a significant milestone in the validation of new mooring technologies. ➡ Enhanced Modeling Capabilities: Principle Power developed mooring and farm-level hydrodynamic capabilities for NREL’s OpenFAST modeling software, enhancing the precision and efficiency of floating wind farm designs. ➡ LCOE Reduction Potential: Demonstrated that shared anchors could reduce the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) in certain water depths by minimizing the need for vessels, operations, and anchoring materials, with only a minimal increase in design risk. Next Steps: Building on these achievements, Principle Power is set to advance its R&D efforts around shared anchor design and reliability through a California Energy Commission Award. Collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) will continue, focusing on advancing designs for floating offshore wind mooring lines and anchors. Additionally, Principle Power will work closely with project developers to evaluate the feasibility and optimization of shared anchor designs for specific deepwater project locations, including the US West Coast.
