The following is a statement from Emily Wilkins, 117th President of the National Press Club, on the guilty verdict in the murder of legendary reporter Jeff German of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “This verdict has brought justice for Jeff German, his family and friends and for the entire world of journalism. While we mourn Jeff’s loss and the pain around it, we are gratified that a jury listened to the evidence and convicted former public official Robert Telles of planning and carrying out the murder of a journalist at his home. While it is shocking to think something like that can happen in America – a country that touts freedom of the press among its prized liberties – today is proof that our system of justice still backs a free press. It also shows that the journalism community’s commitment to truth is stronger than any one person. After Jeff’s murder, Washington Post reporter Lizzie Johnson continued and completed one of Jeff’s ongoing investigations. Last year both Jeff and Lizzie were honored with the Club’s President’s Award.”

WASHINGTON, August 28 – The following is a statement from National Press Club President Emily Wilkins on the death of Reuters safety adviser Ryan Evans while on assignment in Ukraine. “Our hearts go out to the family of Ryan Evans who died when a Russia rocket struck the hotel where he was staying with Reuters personnel in Ukraine. Two Reuters journalists were badly injured in the blast as well, and we are hoping for a quick and full recovery. Covering war is an extremely dangerous business and journalists like this Reuters team do so with courage but also they take every precaution to stay safe so they can bring us the story. Citizen Professionals like Ryan Evans are a vital part of the planning required for journalists to safely function in dangerous areas and deliver important information. During his distinguished career he kept Reuters teams safe in war zones and most recently secure at the Olympics. We know his colleagues will miss him and all he has done to keep them safe. People like Ryan make journalism possible in today’s world.”
