Welcome to our new series, Student Feature Friday! For NHD 2024, students Kaitlin Medina and Cora Hoyt (left) researched the impact of McCarthyism in their local town of Vancouver, WA. Led by their teacher John Zingale (right), they met with their town's Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle (right) who provided the students with firsthand primary source documents for their project. NHD is proud to create local historians who engage with primary sources in their community! #NHD50

About us
NHD is a non-profit education organization in College Park, MD. Established in 1974, NHD offers year-long academic programs that engage over half a million middle- and high-school students around the world annually in conducting original research on historical topics of interest. These research-based projects are entered into contests at the local and affiliate levels, where the top student projects have the opportunity to advance to the National Contest at the University of Maryland at College Park. NHD also seeks to improve the quality of history education by providing professional development opportunities and curriculum materials for educators. NHD is sponsored in part by Kenneth E. Behring, Patricia Behring, HISTORY®, Jostens, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Park Service, Southwest Airlines, Weider History Group, Inc., and the WEM 2000 Foundation of the Dorsey & Whitney Foundation. "Going through the process of this project taught me valuable skills in research, critical thinking, and editing, which I anticipate will be useful and applicable to later projects I complete in my life. I want to pursue science in college and despite this being a history project, I was able to pick a topic in the direction of the interest.” Learn more about 2024 documentary finalist Amelie: https://lnkd.in/ebEH_c27
