A quarter of the top 100 hedge funds are now in UAE, which is becoming the hub (mecca?) for alternatives. The list of participants includes LightHouse, Hudson Bay, Balyasny, Verition, Shroeder, AQR, King Street, Millenium... Why? The first reason is probably that UAE offers a low tax environment, notably no personal income tax(!). The country also has the presence of many HNWs and deep investors (ADIA), surounded in favorable regulations. The country also offered less stringent restrictions than the rest of the world during teh COVID crisis. Its visa system lets talented staff come and work. Support functions are now well-established. All in all, the UAE is not just an EMEA hub anymore, but a global market hub. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are building an ecology, where both investors, managers and employees can grow together. Tip of the hat for that. But a zero-tax environment will never compensate for financial risks at the systemic level. The old financial centers have learned their lessons. Beware of deepfake videos! We have seen deepfake videos, used to create and disseminate false information (or much worse!). Deepfake videos have been used for theft ("Grandma, please send me money urgently"). We now have conference calls with multiple deepfake participants who were real enough to convince an employee to wire money away. Procedure: if you are in doubt about the identity of your caller, ask for their name and call them back through the switchboard of their employer. The financial industry pays women less than men. The discrepancies are large (25% to 50+%) and not reducing. What are the causes? - Banks say that women hold lower rank responsibilities, which combine with the heavily skewed compensation structure to explain the lower average compensations. - This article also mentions the child gap: women who had children lose in progression and compensation in the following years. But academics point to a different explanation. There is a statistically significant correlation between women at senior position and fraud. Simply said, more women at senior positions means less fraud. An interesting article from the Telegraph about the long-term risk from China. In a few words, China's aging population will ensure that the country will never be the world's superpower: - China is an unapologetic IP thief, autocracy, and cyber warrior. - China is threatening democracy, as well as peace in the Pacific. - Its alliance with Putin has made public its anti-western agenda. - China wants to crush Taiwan's vibrant free enterprise economy, as it does in Hong Kong. - The economic leviathan has actively prepared a century of Chinese world dominance. - Integrating China into the global economy has not led to its political integration. China wants to rule the world, not be part of the concert of nations. But this dominance not going to happen: - According to The Lancet, China's population has already reached the peak of its fertility rate, way earlier than the rest of the world. - China is caught in a fertility trap. The aging of its population is irreversible. - The consequences are many. On the economic side, there will be a decrease in consumption and fewer workers. - The Chinese economy has poor fundamentals, which other countries (India) are keen to take advantage of. - The economy is already impacted: decrease in international trade and investments, increased unemployment, and social disaffection. - Older people are not interested in wars, although this risk is not gone in the short term. BTC had a flashcrash on the BitMex exchange yesterday. It only took $55m to bring the asset down to $8,900 (down ~85%). Flash crashes are relatively rare in regular financial markets, thanks to a consolidated price feed. Venues compare their prices to the overall price feeds and immediately prevent abnormal orders. Arbitragers also pull liquidity from one venue to another in a split second to reduce the impact of large orders. Those safety mechanisms have no equivalent in the DeFi space. Venues cannot 'compare themselves' to a benchmark, since there is none. Evergrande has inflated its revenues by $78 bn in 2019 and 2020, says the Chinese government. That's the biggest fraud case in history. For scale: Enron inflated its income by $600m.
