As part of the campaign, NBC and Telemundo stations across the nation will team up with local animal shelters and rescues to help our furry friends find their forever homes and raise vital funds. 🌟 Honoring History 🌟 Tomorrow (June 19), NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth / KXAS will deliver live coverage of ‘Opal’s Walk for Freedom,’ the historic Juneteenth celebration led by Dr. Opal Lee, known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," beginning at 9 a.m. CT. ‘Opal’s Walk for Freedom’ commemorates the journey towards freedom symbolized by a 2.5-mile route, starting and ending at the African American Museum in Dallas. This distance signifies the 2.5 years it took for the Emancipation Proclamation reach Texas. Lee, a 97-year-old social activist and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, tirelessly advocated for Juneteenth to be recognized as a National Day of Observance. Her efforts were instrumental in Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday in 2021.
