"Embracing Uncertainty: The Leader's Dilemma" "'The universe speaks to us, always, first in whispers,' Oprah Winfrey once said. In the ever-changing landscape of brand design, these whispers are all we have to guide us through uncharted territories. As leaders, we frequently navigate decisions without all the information. Running Nemo Design, I have learned that embracing this uncertainty and trusting my instincts can lead to the right outcomes, or at least something to learn from. Life is a series of decisions, and the best ones often come from trusting your gut. Have you ever made a pivotal decision based on gut feeling? How did it impact your creative journey?" #TrustYourGut #CreativeLeadership #DesignThinking #OprahWisdom #DesignLeadership #Collectiveprogression

Aspiring Art Directors: Here’s What You Need to Know. I recently received a great question from Brian Sackey, eager to grow his art direction skills. As someone who has hired and collaborated with may art directors, I’m stoked to share some key insights. 1. Master the Basics: Build a strong foundation in graphic design, typography, color theory, motion, photography, UX, and UI. Practice these skills daily to refine your craft. 2. Create a Diverse Portfolio: Showcase your versatility. Include a mix of personal projects and professional work that highlights various design styles and mediums. 3. Gain Practical Experience: Seek internships, freelance opportunities, or part-time positions at design agencies or in-house creative teams. Real-world experience is invaluable. 4. Develop a collaborative progression mindset: Art directors often work closely with creatives and clients. Hone your collaboration skills and read books on communication and leadership—one of my favorites is “Nonviolent Communication” by Marshall B. Rosenberg. 5. Perfect Your Presentation Skills: Being able to present and defend your design concepts is crucial. Practice pitching your ideas confidently. 6. Develop Resilience: Learn to embrace criticism as part of the creative process. A thick skin will help you iterate and improve. Learn to love the criticism. 7. Commit to Lifelong Learning: Stay curious. Continuously expand your knowledge in culture trends, art history, photography, AI, motion design, and emerging design trends. The Path to Art Director: 🛤️ Typically, it takes about 5-10 years to land an Art Director role. Here’s a suggested career path: - Start with a college degree in graphic design, advertising, communications, or photography. While some may skip this step, college is a fantastic place to connect with future colleagues. - Begin in entry-level roles like production designer or junior graphic designer. Always aim to make your boss’s life easier—curiosity and initiative go a long way. - Progress through roles such as digital marketer, copywriter, or senior graphic designer. Understanding project and account management is key. - Seek leadership opportunities and take on additional responsibilities. Managing people is a skill that not all designers possess, but it’s essential for an Art Director. - Focus on developing soft skills in communication, leadership, and project management. This is where I have concern with the remote working trend. In my opinion, it is hard to learn these soft skills from senior leaders on a Zoom call. These soft skills are critical to leading teams and managing clients. Art Director isn't just about reaching the destination—it's about embracing the journey. Enjoy the process of honing your skills, building relationships, and discovering your unique artistic voice. #ArtDirection #DesignCareer #Leadership #CreativeProcess #ContinuousLearning

Blending Performance Marketing and Branding: Insights from EO Event Our Principal Trevor Grave recently spoke on a panel at EO event with Talie Smith (Smith & Connors) and Scott Ericson (Wheelhouse 20/20). We dug into “Performance Marketing vs. Branding” - a hot topic for businesses aiming for growth and engagement. Key takeaways: Branding is more than just a logo or a catchy tagline; it is the essence of a company’s identity. It establishes a unique brand identity that helps create emotional connections with consumers. Branding fosters trust and loyalty by consistently delivering value and quality, resulting in repeat business, word-of-mouth marketing, and long-term customer relationships. This emotional appeal differentiates a brand from its competitors, allowing it to command premium prices and achieve higher margins. It’s not what you say your brand is, it is what your customer says it is. Performance Marketing is geared towards generating measurable results and driving specific actions, such as clicks, conversions, or sales. It emphasizes data-driven strategies, targeting specific key performance indicators (KPIs) to achieve quantifiable results. Channels like pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, affiliate marketing, email marketing, and search engine marketing (SEM) are optimized for efficiency and conversion rates. Integration is key: Combine both for short-term wins and long-term relationships. Storytelling matters: It’s not just words - it’s about creating authentic connections. Big thanks Michelle Cario for moderating. Shout to our friends Ray and Joyce Tsang (Only Today) for sharing their insights on “Storytelling Through Film: Crafting the Story of Your Business and Brand”, and Barry Raber for his “5 Questions to Get Your Brand Crystal Clear” workshop. Check out his Forbes article here: https://lnkd.in/gSwg9pKf Curious to hear your thoughts. Though Father's Day was this past weekend, we’re still riding the wave of gratitude. Fatherhood is an ongoing test that teaches humility and builds character. And sometimes, dads get a dose of both when they come up short. “However You Dad” celebrates real ‘look back and laugh’ moments, and reminds dads that despite the occasional miscalculation or hold-my-beer lapse in judgment, your family still loves you. And Man Crates has the perfect way to express that appreciation. Here's to all the amazing dads out there. Most of our PR Clients are long-term partnerships, with long-term goals. For brands, this is often the most effective way to use PR. We even have an unofficial edict that we "don't take on projects" but occasionally, the perfect short-term project pops up, and we say yes. What makes a great PR project? 1. Clear goals and a compelling story. In this case, the client's goal was a mention or shout-out in Willamette Week, the local paper known for guiding Portlanders to what is new and cool. 2. It aligns with our values (in this case - community, supporting independent businesses & a love of skateboarding). This story is the best-case outcome. We're counting it as a win. Many thanks to Colin Sharp for trusting us with his story and to Nemo Design Creative Director and former COMMONWEALTH SKATEBOARDING, LLC owner Jennifer Sherowski for the referral. Life is better when you work with good people on cool projects. #skateboarding #PRagency #PortlandOregon #smallbusinessoregon #publicrelations https://lnkd.in/edmTm6Sp
