Michael Valanzola is a delegate from Wales, Massachusetts, to the 2024 Republican National Convention. "It can get quite lonely in Massachusetts, that's for sure," he said. "I grew up in the western and central part of the state. We often say, 'you've got Worcester, you've got Springfield, and you've got Alabama in between.' The part of the state that I grew up in, far more conservative, a lot more red. I mean, my hometown voted for President Trump four years ago, 68% of the vote ... it doesn't always feel like a blue state." Red in a Blue State examines the backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives of Massachusetts attendees and others at the 2024 RNC in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. New England Public Media is sending photojournalist Barry Goldstein to the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to produce “Red in a Blue State: Stories from the 2024 RNC.” With on-the-ground access, Goldstein will examine the backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives of Massachusetts attendees and others at the RNC from Monday, July 15 through Thursday, July 18.
