Earlier this week, VP Harris shared updates two years after releasing the Blue Print for Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis, proposing policies to reduce maternal mortality, advance health equity, and support underserved communities alongside U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
This holds such great weight with me as I lead Nest Health, the first value-based healthcare provider bringing comprehensive care to whole families at home.
💡 My key takeaways:
1️⃣ Care must be comprehensive: The updates emphasize the point that the well-being of mothers directly impacts the health of entire families. I've been saying this for a long time now: families experience health together, period. If we're taking care of mom, we need to take care of mom's family. And that includes the whole family's mental health.
2️⃣ Access and equity are key: Many families on Medicaid face significant barriers in accessing quality care. Dismantling those barriers, expanding beyond the "four walls" and providing resources that are culturally appropriate addresses these disparities head-on. This is woven into the fabric of what we're building here at Nest.
3️⃣ It's time for care delivery innovation: The current system doesn't work for all families — the call to leverage new care models is loud and clear, and not just for the few. By utilizing home-based, telehealth, and mobile services for families on Medicaid, we extend our reach, bringing essential care directly into the homes of those who are otherwise not able to access care.
4️⃣ Progress requires collaboration: The report calls for collaboration among stakeholders, including healthcare providers, policymakers, and community organizations. This collective effort is essential to create sustainable models that truly serve the needs of our most vulnerable populations. Partnerships are key.
These are all crucial markers that what we're building at Nest Health is needed now to drive real change for America's most vulnerable families.
