“Trumpeting today’s arrest to justify the county’s mask ban is silly,” said NYCLU senior staff attorney Beth Haroules. “Reporting suggests black clothes were also involved. One wonders whether the county will soon ban those too.”

“The truth is, a mask ban won’t do anything to stop crime. In reality, it will just push disabled people further into the margins, target protestors with controversial views, and give police new reason to unfairly stop Black, Brown, and Muslim people who are already disparately surveilled and policed,” the NYCLU wrote in a statement.

As of today, Nassau County's mask ban has been signed and is officially in effect. Residents and visitors should expect Nassau officials to begin enforcing the ban immediately.⁠ ⁠ We've said it before and we'll say it again: Officials should be supporting New Yorkers’ right to voice their views and protect their health, not fueling widespread doxxing and threatening arrests. 

NEW: Last night the Nassau County legislature passed a mask ban. Criminalizing masks forces those with disabilities or medical conditions, as well as their families and loved ones, to have to decide whether to segregate themselves from public life or endanger their health and even lives. There are already federal statues in place that target people who mask themselves in order to engage in criminal acts. There's no reason to open up New Yorkers to dangerous interactions with law enforcement, or in the case of people with disabilities, shut them out from society. Our statement:

Everyone, whether or not they are a citizen and no matter their resources, has the right to travel and reside anywhere within the United States — including Texas and New York. Yesterday, the State Supreme Court agreed with our argument as amicus curiae that a state statute relied on by the Adams administration, which prohibits the transportation of individuals to New York who require public services, is unconstitutional. We look forward to the Court dismissing the City’s case in its entirety.

Just one day before the law banning solitary in city jails was due to go into effect, Mayor Adams issued an emergency order to gut the law. New Yorkers have made it very clear they reject the deadly use of solitary confinement, including when their Council Members took the rare step to override the mayor’s veto of the legislation. This is a clear abuse of power by the Mayor. We will keep fighting to make sure this administration fulfills its obligation to execute the law.
