Today is National Women's Equality Day which celebrates the passing of the Nineteenth Amendment granting women the right to vote. But we know that the Nineteenth Amendment and the Women's Suffrage movement often left out Black women and other women of color. While the Nineteenth Amendment granted rights to all women, Black women, especially in the South still faced barriers to the voting booth. Black women still worked tirelessly to ensure they were given the right to vote through the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Although strides have been made with access to the voting booth, many of those strides have taken significant steps back with the Supreme Court ruling gutting the Voting Rights Act in 2013. We are thankful for our #NLCFamily who fight for equality and equal access to the voting booth across the nation. Thank you for all that you do. ID: Illustration of a ballot. 1870 - Fifteenth Amendment gives Black men the right to vote. 1920 - Nineteenth Amendment gives women* the right to vote. *Black women, especially in the south, still faced unequal access to the ballot box. They ruled that the coverage formula in Section 4(b) was unconstitutional. States immediately pass laws to disenfranchise voters and continue to today.

Believe it or not, New Leaders Council is NOT only for those work in politics. It takes cross-sector leaders to change the world. That's why our chapters are intentional about creating cohorts that reflect these ecosystems of change. Applications and nominations are still open for 2025 Institute. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/eQy47UE. ID: Myth: NLC is only for those who work in politics. Less than 10% of the 2024 Fellows worked in politics. Fact: NLC is for cross-sector leaders across industries. Over 60% of the 2024 Fellows worked in Nonprofit, Government, Education, and Healthcare.

"NLC Alumni are everywhere, advancing progress in every industry and issue-area across the country..." - Candace Stanciel, NLC Atlanta 2013 We are reflecting on Candace's letter from the 2023 NLC Annual Report and are grateful for her leadership within and outside of NLC. At the 2024 NLC Convention, Candace announced she would be stepping down from the NLC National Board at this time. During her announcement, Candace shared her vision and admiration for NLCers all across the country. Her inspiring words resonated with our convention attendees and we look forward to her next phase as a #newkindofleader! Thank you again Candace!

Don't worry, before we send you out on the big stage to change the world, we'll make sure to train you first. If you want to pick up some moves to help you on your leadership journey, then the 2025 New Leaders Council Institute is for you. While we can't guarantee that learning how to dance is part of the curriculum (well, maybe if you attend Convention), we can ensure that you won't freeze during fundraising, that you'll learn how to break it down with smooth communication skills, and successfully spin your way into organizing and moving people. We'll train you how to lead with authenticity and not borrow anyone else's style. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/eQy47UE. ID: Viral Olympic breakdancer. Don't worry, we'll actually train you. NLC logo. https://lnkd.in/eQy47UE
