Newsday Media Group brought attention to how the issue of housing has taken front and center stage in this upcoming Presidential election. Both parties recognize that our country is in desperate need of more affordable housing and have offered their views on how to tackle it. With housing in the national spotlight, the issues of the slow permitting process, strict zoning regulations, and the need for an incentive-based approach to development is becoming more common in the national discussion.

Dr. Sue Cohen, Director of Early Childhood and Psychological Services, was featured in Newsday Media Group to discuss the impact of the pandemic on young students in our community. "The anxiety trickles down. They may not know about the pandemic, but they see that the anxiety is amped up," Dr. Cohen said. "If they're not succeeding, they can fall behind. Their self-esteem takes a hit." https://lnkd.in/eK5XTexc

As my summer internship with Newsday Media Group wraps, I am so proud to share how invaluable the experience has been. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow in such a dynamic newsroom environment. Since June, I have reported on crime, courts, and police for Newsday on Long Island, NY. Thanks to my editor, I hit the ground running immediately. During my first week, I collaborated with staff reporters to cover one of the biggest stories of the summer: the alleged "Gilgo Beach Serial Killer" charged with two additional murders. Sitting in the gallery that morning was unlike anything I have experienced in my career. I spent the next nine weeks in and out of courtrooms, pressers, and phone calls. I wrote stories on everything from a stabbing at a children's amusement park to an MS-13 member accused of narco-terrorism. I also collaborated with other interns on a larger project exploring Gen Z's opinions of June's presidential debate and the upcoming election. Outside of the newsroom, Newsday afforded me the opportunity to tour the New York Times production facility, where our paper and over two dozen local and national periodicals are printed daily. Here, I was awed watching one of my stories be plated, pressed, and printed all in less than an hour. Working for Newsday has been a reminder of what a gift journalism truly is. The experience has sharpened my instincts, given me countless connections, and evolved my skills as a reporter and writer. Thank you to Robert Shields, Monte Young, and Monica Quintanilla for the past several weeks. Your direction and mentorship have been the highlight of my Newsday experience. Also, thank you to Michael O'Keeffe, Grant Parpan, and Janon Fisher for showing me the ropes as I navigated New York's (not always straightforward) legal landscape for the first time. Last but not least, I am thankful for my fellow interns, Chloe-Ryan Woolfolk, Nicolas Villamil, Jacqueline Cole, Nayden Villorente, Jasmine Sellars, Tess Ferguson, Sanjana Joshi, and Grace Keating. Thank you all for inspiring me and always having the perfect synonym when I need it. Concluding my 10-week internship at Newsday Media Group, I am forever grateful for such a memorable experience. It has been a dream come true to work in a newsroom with such incredible journalists and it means the world to work on so many impactful stories. Throughout my reporting as an undergraduate at Stony Brook University, I have familiarized myself with Long Island, even considering myself a native nowadays. Knowing the island, I have been blessed with the opportunity to be a Breaking News reporter at Newsday. From this opportunity, I traveled all over Long Island. I told the stories of so many amazing people covering topics such as transit, Breaking News, Long Island Life, Business, and more! Being out on the field, I reported on veterans, scholars, initiatives, and so many inspiring people across the island. As a Breaking News Reporter, I reported on 25 stories reaching over 55,000 people. Reaching a larger audience from platforms such as print and digital media through my internship at Newsday is such a compelling facet of communications, and it is unfathomable how impactful a reporter's storytelling can be across Long Island. In addition to writing for print and reporting on the field, I worked alongside Newsday TV and had the opportunity to experience the ins and outs of broadcast journalism. Also, I had the chance to use and enhance my skills in video editing, as I had the opportunity to work with Newsday's social media team. From my experience, the newsroom at Newsday was a family. Everyone I have worked with or come across in the newsroom was so helpful with their advice and guidance as a reporter, and they always checked in with me on how things were going and gave me the right tools to enhance my storytelling. I cherish this working environment and am grateful for such a caring staff. I would like to thank  Robert Shields, Monte Young, and Robert Levin for providing me with this platform to grow as a reporter and for your continuous help throughout the summer. There are so many other people I have met at Newsday who have taught me so much, so I very much appreciate you all for your help! Lastly, to my fellow interns, it has been such an amazing summer not only working with you all but getting to know you all and learning from everyone. It has been such a pleasure working with you all! Below are the stories I reported on this summer: https://lnkd.in/e-M5vG8d

And just like that, my internship at Newsday Media Group has come to a close. The knowledge I have obtained this summer is truly unmatched. I was able to gain understanding in all aspects of broadcast journalism with the help from INCREDIBLE figures in news. From learning to direct with Heather McGowan and Raymond Wilson with high tech equipment, to gaining a complete understainding of ENPS and producing with the help of the great Artie Mochi. To learning that it is possible to do it ALL like Jocelyn Cruz. Learning to become a better reporter from Ken Buffa, to understanding how to navigate this business as a Black woman with Jasmine Anderson. And Bobby Cassidy taking the time to ensure I was producing the best work I could. I even had the opportunity to do many man on the street interviews to contribute to packages and stories. I also was able to receive photo credits on important stories like Gen Z’s take on the upcoming presidential election. This all was made possible with the help of John Keating. Everyday for 10 weeks I was surrounded by these AMAZING people who never shyed away from showing they believed in me. The environment at Newsday is truly one of one. Thank you Monte Young Robert Shields for allowing me to be in such a cultivating newsroom. And thank you Don and Rochell Bishop Sleets for being such amazing leaders and role models. This was just the experience I needed being fresh out of undergrad, having my very first TV internship and being in such a cultivating work place. This is just beginning of my journalism journey and I am so blessed to have had this start at a place like Newsday. And to my fellow interns, I am so appreciative of the bond we have built this summer. I am going to miss you all dearly and cannot wait to see more of your brilliant work.
