The Alton Bay Ice Runway will not be opening this year due to lack of ice formation. As of Saturday February 3rd, the ice on Alton Bay was only 6 inches and in order for the safe operation, including plowing and maintaining the ice runway, the NHDOT Bureau of Aeronautics requires a minimum of 12 inches of ice in the bay. The days are getting longer and the anticipated warmer weather later this week will not help to attain the 12 inches of ice necessary for any duration of time. We recognize that many look forward to the opening of the ice runway every year and it is disappointing when the weather does not cooperate, which happens from time to time. There are many elements, including the weather, that makes this a unique NH airport. We look forward to the safe opening the Alton Bay Ice Runway in 2025! Wow! I was honored and humbled to receive this recognition from such a prestigious organization on behalf of the men and women that I have worked with and for at the New Hampshire Department of Transportation for the past 30 plus years. Highway safety is a collaborative effort that takes all hands on deck. While I have learned much from my DOT mentors, I am still learning everyday from the next generation of highway professionals. They inspire and energize me in so many ways. I am proud of the work we have done and appreciate the recognition, knowing that there is much left to do. I can't wait to get started.
