Updates

  • The streets of this new district in the Netherlands will be home to kids, pedestrians and bikes: no cars allowed. World Economic Forum reports on the soon-to-be developed district in Utrecht that prioritizes people and sustainability over cars. Merwede will be almost completely car free. Walls and courtyards will be covered by greenery and rooftops will feature solar panels. As there's only room for parking for 1 out of 3 households, the 12.000 residents will share a fleet of cars that are parked on the outskirts. Nearby public transportation connects them to all parts of the Netherlands. Multiple stakeholders were involved in the design, including BURA urbanism, Gemeente Utrecht and 10 owners. • It’s the only part of the diplomat life that I truly dislike: the goodbyes. But the time has come, I’m about to leave my heart in San Francisco. What a ride it has been. From the eConsulate during the pandemic lockdowns, scaling up our startup activities, the pop-up consulates to bring our consular services to Dutch citizens all over the western US, and countless memorable missions and visits. I shall never forget our Prime Minister riding a Waymo shouting with joy. Or better still: Her Majesty Queen Maxima, dressed in bright pink, being offered flowers by some other queens in the Castro. Only in San Francisco. I’m grateful to have worked with such fabulous colleagues. Everybody that visits the consulate says the same thing: there’s such a welcoming atmosphere and a great team spirit. More than any individual activity or accomplishment, this is what I am most proud of. Many thanks to our 8 amazing honorary consuls, our dear colleagues at the NBSO office in Los Angeles, to our friends in the Holland in the Valley network, the Netherland America Foundation, my fellow consuls general, the city of San Francisco, the state of California and the Office of Foreign Missions, and the many other friends we made in the beautiful states of California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Alaska, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Utah. We’ll be in The Hague for the next few years, don’t be a stranger when you’re in the neighborhood!

  • 🌴 Welcome to Los Angeles! This weekend, we joined forces with the J. Paul Getty Museum and NBSO Los Angeles to host a networking event for the exhibition "On Thin Ice: Dutch Depictions of Extreme Weather." The exhibition explores 17th-century global cooling and how artists of the time highlighted the inherent uncertainty of life. It features works by Hendrick Avercamp and other notable Dutch artists from the 1600s. 🖼 Agnes Koppelman, Deputy Consul General of the Netherlands Consulate in San Francisco, emphasized the relevance of this Dutch heritage for today's challenges: “The innovative and entrepreneurial spirit fostered in the Netherlands during the 17th century continues to drive our efforts to address global climate change”, she said. 🔁 Dutch water management techniques, from historical methods to modern innovations, still influence our cities and landscapes, including those in California! 👏 A special thanks to the J. Paul Getty Museum and John Giurini for hosting, to panelists Alec Aldrich, Sarah Mallory, Isabella Lores-Chavez, PhD and to Getty curator Stephanie Schrader for putting together a fascinating exhibition. The exhibition runs from May 28 to September 1, 2024. Discover more here: https://lnkd.in/d73E8hyV

  • 🚲 Two wheels, one love! We hosted a workshop on the latest of Dutch cycling culture, attended by representatives from local, regional, and state transit agencies, as well as advocates and professors from the Bay Area. Some key takeaways: ✅ To design for cyclists one needs to consider the mental load of individuals cycling through a city. The easier it is for cyclists to navigate through a city, the more pleasant and popular the experience will become, which is why we need to focus on unburdening and streamlining the experience of urban cyclists. ✅ Cycling paths transcending municipal borders in order to create a seamless regional network are essential to improving existing infrastructure in the Bay Area. The day was concluded with a panel discussion on urban sustainable mobility, bringing together experts, engineers, cycling professionals, advocates, and enthusiasts to discuss the future of cycling in cities like San Francisco! Panel members talked about the emancipatory power of the bicycle and the political courage required to improve cycling infrastructure. 🔎 “While San Francisco and the broader Bay Area are great places to cycle, their infrastructure and transportation policies are not yet where they need to be to help more people shift to safe cycling.” summarized Luke Bornheimer. 🗣 The Netherlands is committed to an international future of smart and green mobility. We would love to continue the conversation. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have suggestions for collaboration focused on further building sustainable transportation.

  • 🍊 🌈 Pride month may be over, but the work of championing LGBTIQ+ rights around the world continues year round. As a joint European community we participated in the San Francisco Pride parade to champion LGBTIQ+ rights, love and equality. 🤝 🇪🇺 Nearly 200 individuals from all local European delegations came far from their homelands to celebrate pride together. This truly embodies the essence of community! Continuing this spirit, we welcomed our friends from Switzerland, the UK and Australia into our group. Did you know? The Netherlands was the first country to legalize same-sex marriage in the world, and we take pride in representing that in one of the most vibrant LGBTIQ+ cities in the world. 👏 Special thanks for everyone who joined: together we celebrate diversity and love!
