Last week, in partnership with ECOnorthwest, NAO launched two wage-related research studies that showcase the pronounced wage gap between the nonprofit sector and those in the for-profit and public sectors. Our finding shows that 50.2% of nonprofit employees hold a bachelor’s or higher degree than for-profit employees (25.5%). Yet, wages are more stagnant in the nonprofit sector, and 8 out of 10 employees will likely leave their mission-driven jobs for the for-profit sector. For a deeper dive into these econometric studies and NAO’s ideas to reduce the nonprofit wage gap, visit ➡ https://lnkd.in/ejvg-z4Q Through our research, we hope to make a systemic change in how nonprofits are funded – especially through government funding – to increase wages and benefits for those working in our sector. #wagesuppression #nonprofitwages

NAO has been working on a series of studies to lift the veil on what’s really happening with wages, compensation and benefits in the nonprofit sector. We recently released two wage and compensation resources for you to check out! In partnership with NAO, ECOnorthwest conducted an econometric study of nonprofit wages across specific categories of social service nonprofits. This study gives us important information to make the case for government to rethink the ways they invest in communities through the nonprofits that do this important work. Two free resources unveil the wage gap between the nonprofit sector and the for-profit and public sectors, validating that wages are suppressed in Oregon’s social service nonprofits, and more needs to be done in government to create thriving wages for these critical workers. Secondly, NAO’s 2024 Oregon Nonprofit Compensation & Benefits Report is used to determine appropriate compensation and benefits levels for staff, among many other factors, including equity, skill level and budget. You can download a free executive summary or purchase the full report, which includes an interactive dashboard that allows you to drill down into details and cross-reference compensation and benefits data by budget size, number of employees, primary area of focus, and geographic region. NAO members receive a special discount. Check them both out by visiting our website at https://lnkd.in/gQum3e7K We hope our new studies are useful to your organizations and human resource practices. Through NAO’s advocacy work and your participation, our goal is to make a systemic change in how nonprofits are funded to increase wages and benefits to those working in our sector.

Summer is fully upon us, but as always, as we are in the midst of one season, we are always looking forward to what is next and reflecting on what has happened within the sector in the past. On June 25, 2024, The Giving USA Foundation, in partnership with Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, released Giving USA: The Annual Report on Philanthropy. We wanted to take a bit to talk about the trends this comprehensive report is showing and about upcoming reports that NAO will be releasing as well. Knowing the trends and impacts within our sector is critical for future planning of what giving may look like. The Giving USA report looks at giving trends, comparing 2021-2022 to 2022-2023. Much of the information is similar to what we already know – individual giving is down as inflation rises. However, the news isn’t all bad. 2023 saw an all-time high in giving, with 557.16 billion dollars, even when adjusted for inflation. Bequests saw the only positive change over 2021-2022, with an increase of .6%. With 77 million Americans age 60 and older, bequests and planned giving are areas we should start focusing on now, as this number is expected to grow as the Baby Boomer generation continues to age. Their wealth grew 30% between 2019 and 2023, so stewarding these donors should be a critical step in your development planning going forward.
