We love to see the impact of our Safety First and Thriving Communities grants in communities across our 22-state network. In Cleveland, Tennessee, grant recipient City Fields is empowering residents with career and job-readiness training for individuals facing barriers to employment. With their grant, City Fields was able to provide three scholarships for their welding bootcamp, allowing students to earn an American Welding Society (AWS) certification through their workforce development training program. 🔗 Learn more at https://lnkd.in/eXMxPvjB.

I appreciate National Transportation Safety Board Chair Homendy coming to Atlanta to meet with our leadership team to discuss the significant progress we’ve made on our safety initiatives. We also appreciate her recognition of our commitment to safety and to continued collaboration.   We deeply respect Chair Homendy and the crucial work of the NTSB. Norfolk Southern and the NTSB share the same goal when it comes to safety. We are dedicated to not just meeting but exceeding their safety recommendations.   We were proud to show her the backbone of our operations– the Network Operations Center, our mission control where all our trains are dispatched throughout our 22-state network. We also got to demonstrate RapidSOS, a technology that delivers immediate consist information to first responders and enhances our emergency response capabilities.   We promised to make #NorfolkSouthern the gold standard of safety in the rail industry, and we are delivering on that promise every day.

Our railroaders make a difference that extends beyond the freight we move. At NS, we know the service we provide our customers affects their operations, employees, and communities across our network. For Locomotive Engineer Chris Shirley, that reality motivates him every day – and his dedication to providing outstanding service caught the attention of our customer, Scruggs Blending & Packaging LLC, in Villa Rica, Georgia. “We do business with dozens of vendors on a daily, real-time basis, and it is extraordinarily rare that we run across an employee of another company that shows the commitment and caring that Chris does in supporting our business,” said Tom Adams, Chief Operating Officer of Scruggs Blending and Packaging. “Literally speaking, it gives us comfort knowing Chris is on the job and cares about the outcomes that affect our business.” Thank you, Chris, for leading by example, always going above and beyond for our customers, and inspiring us all to “be good today and better tomorrow!” #ThankARailroader

Congratulations to Michael Beaver, Bridge and Building Flagging Foreman in Columbia, SC, for 3️⃣8️⃣ years of injury-free service with NS! We sat down with Michael to learn about his incredible career over the past (almost) four decades. Q: Where did you start your career at NS and what do you do now? A: I started out as a track laborer on a tie and surfacing gang in 1986 for a few months. I then went to the Inman Yard in Atlanta laying timber before transferring to the Bridge side in Columbia, SC. In 1987, I transferred to the then Georgia Division before coming to the former Piedmont Division in 1991, which covered Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. I now cover most of South Carolina. Q: How do you work safely? A: I stay focused on the job at the time and concentrate on what needs to be completed. I also stay aware of my surroundings. This approach has served me well over the years. Q: What’s a typical day like for you? A: We start every day off with a job briefing to ensure we clearly understand our work for the day and can work safely. I work directly with construction contractors who perform work for NS. I flag them to the job site, and I ensure they perform their work according to our plans. I then inspect their work to ensure that it is accurate and meets our expectations. Q: What’s the most interesting aspect of your job? A: I travel a lot and get to meet new people and see different places and things. For much of my career, I covered territory from Washington, D.C. to Atlanta. I’ve gotten to see how many people live. Q: Why did you choose railroading as a career? A: I grew up in a small town that didn’t have a lot going on. The railroad ran through town. I knew several people in town who were railroaders. Getting to work for the railroad has allowed me to see the world a bit. Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of work? A: I spend time with my family. I also love fishing and gardening. Thank you, Michael, for your commitment to safety every single day! 👏 #SafetyRecognitioNS #Safety #NorfolkSouthern

It’s already time to flip the page in your NS Calendar? JULYin'! 😉📆 This month’s photo was taken by Train Dispatcher Scott Williams. At our Network Operations Center in Atlanta, Scott works the overnight shift directing trains across a busy corridor that stretches more than 200 miles in northeastern Ohio. Being a Youngstown, Ohio native, Scott now oversees the very territory he grew up in! During a weekend outing with friends in Chattanooga, Scott captured this southbound double-stack intermodal train rolling across Tenbridge, a vertical lift span over the Tennessee River. Thank you, Scott, for sharing your photo and keeping our trains moving! #TeamNS
