Resident bat biologist Eran Amichai attended a bat capture and handling workshop in Kentucky last week where he snapped this photo of a female Indiana Bat being fitted with an arm band. These bands help us understand important aspects of their biology such as longevity, site fidelity, and migration behavior. Normandeau is partnering with the Resource Conservation District of Tehama County planning the restoration of a historic side channel in California’s Sacramento River to benefit rearing of endangered winter run Chinook salmon juveniles. This busy-looking pink beauty is a spider flower (Tarenaya hassleriana). Although non-native to New Hampshire and not yet documented in the area, it was spotted recently during a wetland delineation near the bank of the Ashuelot River. This species likely escaped from someone’s garden, a common method of introduction for non-native species and/or was carried downstream by high water flows. Not all non-native species become invasive, but care should be taken with all exotic vegetation as they can lead to extinction of native species through competition, alteration of habitats and food webs, and result in reduced biodiversity. #Normandeau #botany #spiderflower #AshuelotRiver #responsibleplanting #environmentalconsultants

Here's an American pelecinid wasp our field team came across while conducting a wetland delineation in New Hampshire last week. Although they look menacing, they don't sting humans. Instead, they are parasitoids of June beetles. Parasitoids are insects that sting other insects and lay their eggs on, in, or near the incapacitated host. Our TIMR technology helps to mitigate bat mortality rates at windfarms. It does so by detecting the presence of bats in the area and factoring in weather conditions to then send a high-risk alert to the turbine SCADA to initiate turbine curtailment until the collision risk has decreased. Normandeau is as invested in the continuing education of its workforce as it is in the science itself. We regularly encourage staff members to attend conferences, seminars, and further their education as they so choose. This summer, one of our lab taxonomists attended a marine macroalgae seminar at Eagle Hill Institute in Maine.
