On World Giraffe Day, it’s more important than ever to face the reality of the threats giraffes face in the wild. 🌍 Over the last three decades, Africa’s giraffe population has decreased by 40%. 🦒📉 The North Carolina Zoo is helping to protect giraffes in Tanzania by assessing their population health and helping rangers on the ground reduce poaching. The Zoo is also actively involved in investigating a mysterious skin disease that as of yet has no known cure. 🦠 Giraffes are facing significant threats in the wild due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. The AZA's SAFE program brings together expertise and resources from AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums to make a meaningful impact on giraffe conservation.♥️🦒 #azasafechallenge #WorldGiraffeDay

🌍✨ Celebrate Zoo and Aquarium Month with us! 🐾 The North Carolina has been accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 1984. The AZA accreditation process is rigorous and comprehensive. 🌟 Institutions undergo a thorough review and inspection process that evaluates everything from animal care and enrichment to veterinary programs, conservation efforts, and educational outreach. This ensures that only the highest standards are met, prioritizing the well-being of animals and the impact on global conservation. 🦁🐟 Animal welfare is at the heart of AZA-accredited facilities. At the North Carolina Zoo, we provide stimulating habitats, expert medical care, and engage in critical conservation projects worldwide, protecting species and habitats for future generations. 🌿💙

Got any plans this Saturday? Come enjoy the great outdoors! 🥾🌲 Celebrate National Trails Day by hiking Ridge’s Mountain located at 504 Summit Court, Asheboro, NC. Zoo staff will be present at the trailhead from 10 am - 2 pm to greet hikers and talk about the history of Ridge’s Mountain. The existing two-mile hiking trail follows the ridgeline to the summit then loops back down. On the hike you can expect to see interesting rock formations and massive boulders up to 50-feet tall. Access to the trail is available to the public by reservation (336-879-7711) but reservations are not needed on June 1. The entire mountain is permanently protected and managed as a State Nature Preserve by the North Carolina Zoo. It is an extremely important site for wildlife conservation due to the excellent habitat it provides for many native plants and animals such as bobcats, deer, box turtles, and birds.
