Childhood as we knew it is so different for today’s kids. Playing outdoors, spending time with friends, reading books, and hanging out with family is happening a lot less to make room for hours of snap chatting, instagramming, and catching up on YouTube. With children spending anywhere between three to seven hours daily in front of a screen, many childhood essentials are pushed aside for online amusement. If you are a parent struggling with how to navigate the digital age and wrestling with what the right age is for a smartphone and social media, we have news of a timely speaker coming to Maine! Brooke Shannon is the founder of a movement called Wait Until 8th, a pledge being taken by more and more parents to delay giving children a smartphone until at least the end of 8th grade and delay social media until age 16. Brooke will be sharing her message with anyone interested in learning more on Wednesday evening, August 28 at 6 pm at Central Elementary School in Corinth. Sarah Dubay was a true pillar of the community before she passed away in November 2021 at age 46, having served on the Bangor City Council, chair of the board at Penquis Community Action Agency, chair of the governmental affairs committee at the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce, a board member for the University of Maine Alumni Association, and more. That is why Northern Light Acadia Hospital is pleased to share that Sarah’s former employer, First National Bank, has made a generous $50,000 donation in her memory to our Acadia for All campaign. The funds will be used to enhance programming for our pediatric patients in our therapeutic garden – something we know Sarah would have loved. Another staff member knocks it out of the park – and we’re proud as can be! Please join us in congratulating Northern Light Acadia Hospital’s Makenzie H., LMSW-cc on earning her conditional license as a Clinical Social Worker. Makenzie is a familiar face in our Pediatric Inpatient department. You see, she started with us as a Psych Tech before transitioning to a Clinician Graduate Orientee, a position she has held while completing her MSW, and she is now officially a licensed inpatient clinician. Makenzie has been a huge asset to Acadia, and we are so pleased that she leveraged her tuition reimbursement benefit to further her education and advance her career with Northern Light Health. Awesome job, Makenzie, and thank you for all that you do for our pediatric patients. We’re thankful you’re a member of Team Acadia!

Susan Slick, MHR, MBA, director, Learning and Education at Acadia and a member of the Maine Air National Guard, was recently honored by the US Air Force with the Outstanding Performer Award! She was recognized for her collaborative work with the Maine–Montenegro National Guard Partnership as well personally offering monthly Lunch & Learn mental health trainings to Maine ANG members. Susan was presented with official coins by Maine’s senior US Senator, Susan Collins, and by Frank Kendall, Secretary of the Air Force. Congratulations, Susan, and thank you for your dedication to ensuring our nation remains safe and secure, and that our valued Air National Guard members receive access to necessary mental health resources.
