About us
Northern Light Mercy Hospital is an acute care hospital in Portland, Maine with a total of 230 inpatient beds. All rooms are 100 percent private. Private rooms enhance a speedy recovery and a more restful, less stressful stay for our patients. Beyond our doors, you’ll find the latest medical technology, used by a team of highly skilled doctors, nurses, physician assistants, therapists, and support staff. Alongside all of this technology, you’ll find care that recognizes each patient – body, mind, and spirit. Established in 1918 by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland and the Sisters of Mercy, Northern Light Mercy Hospital’s mission has always been to carry out the healing work of Christ by providing compassionate, accessible, clinically excellent healthcare, especially to the poor and disadvantaged. We advocate for a society in which all can realize their full potential and achieve the common good. We give priority to those that society ignores. Our community focus amounts to nearly $12 million in benefits annually. These benefits range from unreimbursed and pro-bono medical services to community education and prevention outreach. Northern Light Mercy Hospital is part of a non-profit organization and sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas.

"Currently, one of the biggest opportunities that was presented to me was to be able to get back to school. I can honestly say that I've never been so proud of myself. My daughter is also proud of me. She gets excited and happy for me. My parents, my sister and even staff at McAuley have expressed how proud they are of my accomplishments. I can see a bright future ahead of me, and I can see good things from my life and my daughter's life. I honestly don't think I would be here if it wasn't for God's ultimate mercy, McAuley, and especially Michelle's believing in me." These are the words of a former resident speaking about the support she received from McAuley Residence. Thank you to our partners at Southern Maine Community College for helping us share these stories and for engaging in this transformational work. Please consider showing your support for these life-changing services in our community at the McAuley Residence 5K on Saturday, September 14—a fun walk/run with lots of activities for the kids. "Personally, I feel that you make it a lot less scary to bridge the gap into education and employment. Your confidence in figuring out pathways with us gives me more confidence in myself. A big reason why I decided to go back to school after dropping out of college twice is because I don't have to do it alone." A day that changed everything. We’ve all had one of those days and I’m guessing you may be already answering that question for yourself: the birth of a child, a medical diagnosis, the unexpected loss of a loved one. The date itself brings up memories of what your life was like before and then after. This pivotal date for me was more than three decades ago—February 12, 1993. This is where my story began! - Carolyn Delaney Read more about Carolyn's journey at https://ow.ly/KEez50SWSRe This is why we do what we do!
