At Novant Health Foundation, we know our interns are future change-makers with the potential to transform communities. Welcoming our four purpose-driven interns this summer has been a truly rewarding experience. As of last week, they have completed their internship, and their enthusiasm for philanthropy and commitment to giving back has made such an impact on all of us. Our teams have been inspired by their fresh perspectives and dedication, and we’re excited see them continue on to make a difference in our communities. Through the power of philanthropy, our next group of dedicated interns is powering their way through the Bridges to Healthcare program 💜 As part of the Phase I program, interns get a full CNA summer immersion experience, providing students with an opportunity to transition from the program with a CNA certification. As of now, the program participants have completed two weeks of shadowing CNAs and nurses. This provided them with valuable perspective on the caring and rigorous nature of the healthcare field. Now, they are continuing their learning journey through classes with Sankofa Training & Wellness Institute to work towards their CNA certification. This progress showcases their hard work, dedication, and passion for making a positive impact on others' lives. Join us in wishing them the best as they continue to grow and enhance their skills. The future of healthcare is brighter with such passionate individuals stepping up to serve. Bridges to Healthcare was created in honor of the late Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown, a former family physician and healthcare leader at Novant Health, who was dedicated to strengthening our communities. Since launching Bridges to Healthcare in January 2022, a total of 250 students have participated in the program. We're so grateful for the $100,000 in private, family foundation, and corporate support secured by the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation to assist with the summer launch in the Novant Health Coastal region, and we want to extend a special thanks to Marand Builders, Inc. and Live Oak Bank for their generous support. Did you know that through Novant Health’s Bridges to Healthcare paid internship program, high school students experience real-world clinical and nonclinical rotations and gain access to mentorships in a variety of healthcare service areas, including radiology, rehabilitation, respiratory services, and human resources? Thanks to our amazing Inclusion & Pipeline team and generous philanthropic partners, students can also receive educational assistance for healthcare-related coursework at any community college in North Carolina. Avery Lowe was one of ten students in Rowan County lucky enough to get the opportunity to participate in the Bridges to Healthcare program. As a young girl, she had dreamed of growing up to become a nurse. “My mom worked in healthcare and also had a lot of health issues. I wanted to be someone who helped sick people feel better.” After completing Phase 1 of the program in December of last year, where she spent time in the Emergency Department, she decided that her goal was to become an RN and work there, supporting people in their moments of greatest need. Currently, Avery is working as a CNA at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center, expanding her experience and sharing her bright light and compassion with her patients. Stories like Mylee’s serve as a reminder that our philanthropic community and Novant Health team members truly have the most incredible impact on people’s lives! Mylee was born at 22 weeks and 4 days at just one pound - the youngest preemie ever to graduate the neonatal intensive care unit at Novant Health Betty H. Cameron Women and Children’s Hospital in Wilmington. Her chances of survival were only 20%, but Mylee, her parents, and her care team rallied together. After 142 days in the NICU, Mylee got to go home. Between the 274 logged hours of "kangaroo care" (skin-to-skin contact which helps regulate a newborn’s heartbeat and temperature, boost oxygen levels, and ease the pain of frequent injections and blood draws), two surgeries, and the many long days spent in the NICU, Kimmy and Danny (mom and dad) witnessed firsthand Mylee’s Novant Health team’s expertise and dedication. Kimmy remarked on the NICU nurses’ deep familiarity with Mylee, which enabled them to be the first to detect signs of a life-threatening infection when she just “wasn't acting right.” Dr. Sheri Carroll, along with nurses Katherine Cope, Lynda Smith, Karen Clemens, Victoria Lamonte, Tonya Todd, and Jen Mann became trusted allies in the almost 5 months that Mylee was in the NICU. The Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital expansion is well underway, and your generous philanthropy is playing a crucial role in making these renovations and growth possible: 🪟 More space for infants and children in our care with the addition of more NICU bays and room expansions. 💜 Families can rest and recover in the Ronald McDonald House Family Room at Caroline’s Corner, designed to provide a dedicated spot for families to find care, comfort, and hope, while staying close to their child. 🎁 Children were surprised and delighted to receive special gifts, collected by so many people throughout our community. 🐶 Hemby Children’s Hospital now has a therapy dog, Puggle. Visits with Puggle give our little patients reassurance, help them relax and stay calm. These services, enhanced spaces and so much more were made possible for patients at Hemby Children’s Hospital with help from Novant Health Foundation philanthropic partners. Today we are celebrating the Scotts Hill Medical Center topping out. Scotts Hill Medical Center, projected to open in the fall of 2026, won’t be just a hospital, but a campus, with a variety of services all in one centralized location. This will include an imaging department for tests like X-rays and MRIs, a medical office building for screenings and physician appointments, and a cancer center where patients can receive radiation and chemotherapy treatments. This design embraces evolving health care trends where fewer medical procedures require an overnight hospital stay, safety and efficiency remain paramount for both patients and team members, and medicine holistically focuses on wellness, not just treating illness. Scotts Hill Medical Center was made possible in large part through philanthropy. We're incredibly grateful for the support of our generous partner and community member, Bill Rudisill, whose gift to support Scotts Hill Medical Center has been integral in bringing this comprehensive care center to life. Bill, a former NHRMC Foundation board member, has been a pillar of support for New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation for more than two decades, contributing to many programs and initiatives over the years. He has created incredible impact through gifts made by the Rudisill Family Foundation and as an individual, as well as through the CJB Foundation in partnership with his late wife Debbie’s family. This incredible piece of equipment can provide assisted respiratory breaths to neonates and infants in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit). As of June, Lucan Patel has completed his chemotherapy treatments and all his medications for his acute lymphoblastic leukemia (known as ALL) - a miraculous milestone for the kindergarten graduate 💜 Lucan’s ALL treatments were extensive, multiphased and, overall, lasted more than two and a half years. They included chemotherapy in several different modalities: IV, by mouth, and intrathecal, which is chemo given directly into the spinal fluid through a lumbar puncture. He endured spinal taps, bone marrow examinations and central line surgeries. Just like every single one of our patients who has battled cancer, Lucan and his family exemplify what it means to stay strong, live fiercely, and embrace hope and community. From the start of his journey until now, Lucan has had the team of Hemby Children’s Hospital supporting and rooting for him. For kids like Lucan Patel, visiting a hospital can be daunting and overwhelming. At Novant Health Foundation, we're deeply appreciative of the opportunity to support the remarkable efforts of the Novant Health team in making hospital visits more comforting for these young patients and their families.
