Educated in Mechanical Engineering at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), he began his career consulting on EV projects, gaining essential industry insights. His dedication led him to Mercedes-Benz AG, where he was a technical project manager working on the development of their first 100% electric model series, Smart Facelift (2019), and later influenced future vehicle platforms in the Strategic Project Department for Compact Cars & SUVs. Simultaneously, Taha pursued a PhD focused on sustainable recycling processes, foundational to his later entrepreneurial efforts. He founded Novocycle Technologies, developing a patented recycling technology for Lithium-Ion Batteries that eschews traditional shredding to prevent impure black mass production.     Today, Cleantech Group published a press release titled "Nations Can Use Battery Recycling to Augment Precious Minerals and Cut Geopolitical Risks." The article has since been republished by Environment+Energy Leader, TechNews180, Chemical Industry Digest, AltEnergyMag.com, North American Clean Energy, American Journal of Transportation, EE Journal, and Renewable Energy Magazine (Thanks!); it covers my recent research on battery recycling innovation. Here is a brief overview and some innovators leading the charge: โ€ขย From 2023 to 2040, global demand for lithium will grow 870%, 210% forย nickel, 390% for graphite, and 220% for cobalt (International Energy Agency (IEA)) โ€ขย The U.S., EU, and China are recycling batteriesโ€™ minerals with 22% lessย energy and 46% fewer emissions compared to mining (Argonne National Laboratory) โ€ขย Battery recycling has three technologies that will be influential: - Direct Recycling: TRL 4/5, restoration of battery materials for reuse inย batteries or energy storage, requires extensive sorting (LOHUM , Princeton NuEnergy, Li Industries, Novocycle Technologies) - Hydrometallurgy:ย TRL 8-9, liquid recovery of all minerals, produces liquidย waste, high process GHG footprint due to chemical reagents required (Ascend Elements, RecycLiCo Battery Materials, tozero) - Pyrometallurgy:ย TRL 9, thermal recovery of nickel, cobalt, but not lithium,ย GHG emissions are more difficult to eliminate than hydrometallurgy (Redwood Materials, Umicore, Ecobat) โ€ขย Multiple milestones to advance circularity and systemic impact:ย  - Improved collection infrastructure (Stena Recycling AB, Nefab) - Improved testing, sorting, and disassembly, preferably automated (Circu Li-ion, Li Industries) - Mandatory recycled content in new batteries (EU Battery Regulation) โ€ข Battery manufacturers, automobile Original Equipment Manufacturersย (OEMs), and refineries are creating localized recycling supply chains toย feed the surging demand for battery materials: - Chemical companies like BASF and Johnson Matthey entering inย hydrometallurgy to fill large chemical demand - Automobile OEMs will develop direct recycling capabilities or energy storage applications seeking higher returns onย existing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) mandatesย (BYD, Toyota Ventures) Full article here: https://lnkd.in/gRNbHYTq Be sure to subscribe here to receive similar insights on all things related to environmental technology: https://lnkd.in/g_XkUpKz

    Redefining Recycling for a Sustainable Future: Transforming Lithium-ion Battery Waste | Shaping a Greener Tomorrow! | Co-Founder @Novocycle Technologies |

    3 Years ago when Taha Uluhan and I started Novocycle Technologies it was very important to me as the CTO to : - Have a clear understanding of the market, industry, and technology; - Find the right and impactful innovation and how to make it great; - Transfer the innovation to the implementation phase; and - Introduce it to the industry. So talking about the battery market and itโ€™s complexity I would like to highlight the following: For example, in the battery industry, there areย issues to considerย aboutย localizations - regulations - materials - manufacturing - various types/ units - various applications - networks - associations - trade partners - exclusive contracts etc. ย  I fully acknowledge that in such a vast, important, and dynamic market that experienced and experiences a 10x growth, mistakes and imperfect interfaces are inevitable occurrences. In recent months, there has been growing awareness of the fragile global value chain in many industries and especially the lithium ion battery sector due to heavy reliance on selective and few companies/ regions for supply. ย  This extreme dependence on a few players and unpredictable events introduces vulnerabilities in the supply chain that impact reliability and cost-effectiveness. The European Union has responded to these challenges with new battery regulations focused on materials sourcing, supply chain resilience, and waste management, e.g., increasing the share of recycled batteries from 5% and introducing a step-wise program for the total recycling efficiency from 50 to 65 to 70% till 2030. These regulations aim to ensure sustainability across the battery lifecycle, from production to disposal, addressing both environmental and economic considerations. ย  Understanding the market demand, regulatory framework and adding some flexibility, allowed us to address this issue early on, and enabled us to introduce recycling efficiencies far above 90% even today in 2024. Looking forward to exceed the EUโ€™s expectations even tomorrow.
