We are honored to have won a Deadline Club award for the New York Amsterdam News' 1st documentary film, Be-Loved, directed by Andre Lambertson, edited by Brent Joseph and produced by our own Damaso Reyes! From the Judges: "This is such a raw and open discussion about gun violence and generational trauma that had us glued to the screen. The perspective in this short documentary is often underrepresented when it comes to violence in communities that are neglected by elected officials. The journalists made the most of incredible access to this community and the multiple voices that propelled the story. Be-loved is someone we won’t forget." https://lnkd.in/e5-_vPXf If you haven't had a change to see the film, take a look: https://lnkd.in/ekz8-jN3

I'm thrilled to be featured in this week's New York Amsterdam News, one of the oldest Black owned newspapers in the country, and I'm even more excited to talk about my recent project, BCKBONE. Using both personal and professional lessons I’ve learned (and had to unlearn) about success, self-doubt, racism, sexism, and community, I created BCKBONE, a zine that launched earlier this year. With a little over 300 copies distributed in Montgomery, AL; Baltimore, MD; Chicago, IL; and of course, NYC, BCKBONE is spreading love throughout the US to overworked Black women and femmes who are giving our very best in places where we are often undervalued, tokenized, underappreciated, and retaliated against. It's a reminder that burnout is not our birthright and that we are indeed the ones we've been waiting for. Thank you Kristin Fayne-Mulroy, Leah Mallory, and The Amsterdam News for the support and the wonderful interview. https://lnkd.in/erJ8TJ4z

We are excited to share our very first #PRIDE issue! For our cover story by News Editor Aaron Foley we look inwards and examine our coverage of the Queer community. "From a reader’s standpoint, though, and if you are someone who carries both Black and queer identities, you would wonder why you’d only feel half or part of yourself when reading the paper of the week. The Black press has owned, and is revered for, its role in documenting Black America where mainstream newsrooms didn’t—and, even if they tried, couldn’t. This is our historic record, born from the refusal and inability to chronicle our time when we were enslaved in this country. "Just as much as the Black press holds the identity of Black America, it has also molded our audience’s impression of it. Its influence on how communities at large view ourselves, particularly during subscription and circulation booms that came with more and more Black folks being able to buy a newspaper as they formed larger and larger economic classes in the mid-century, cannot be understated. That’s why going through the AmNews archives just now, I found myself both in awe of the things we did cover in the line of Black queerness, recoiling at other things we covered with a not-so-gentle touch, and a little bewildered at what didn’t make it in at all." https://lnkd.in/exxTdPdi
