The National Park Service has concluded a multi-year study on Fort Ontario State Historic Site in Oswego, NY. The Fort is an important part of our state and nation’s history, serving as the only refugee shelter in the United States during World War II for those fleeing the Holocaust and housing 982 refugees from 1944 – 1946. Although not a part of the State Historic Site, the Fort’s former gatehouse and adjacent historic buildings may soon be a part of the National Park System. We are looking forward to expanding and developing continued relations with the National Park Service as Congress considers the results of their study. https://ow.ly/l7NQ50SQnSE

In the latest chapter of our Blazing a Trail interactive history timeline, we explore the effects of WWII wartime mobilization on the development of New York State’s parks and historic sites. Learn about the only shelter in the United States for Jewish refugees at Fort Ontario, shifting priorities of a young agency, and the use of parks to assist in the nation’s defense in this new collection of stories from 1941 to 1945. We’re gearing up for National Summer Day of Learning 2024 at Beaver Island State Park! Our Ladders to the Outdoors program oversees the event and works with teachers and youth group leaders to help underserved children experience the outdoors. Program Coordinator KeJuan Harmon shares his story and what the role means to him. “It personally just gives me a feeling of gratitude,” says Harmon, adding that he comes from a high-poverty area himself. “It feels as if I’m being a good servant in this world and giving somebody an opportunity that they may have never had in their life.”
