The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a blood test for colorectal cancer screening in adults 45 and older who are at average risk for the disease. Jonathan Mizrahi, MD, a medical oncologist at Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center, said the Shield test can make a difference in the number of eligible adults who are screened for colorectal cancer. "It is another non-invasive tool to close that gap between the folks that we want screened and the folks that actually are getting screened,” he told WVUE-TV Fox 8. According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate for colorectal cancer is about 90% when it's found early.
