About us

The Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department is a large, multi-faceted law enforcement agency composed of approximately 4,000 staff members and over 800 reserve personnel. The department consists of five organizational functions divided into 20 divisions. The core services provided by the department are: Public Protection, including patrol of land, harbors and coastline, homeland security, court and airport security, and emergency communications; Jail Operations; Technical Services including investigations, coroner services, forensics, emergency management and centralized Countywide communications systems; and Administrative and Support Services. The Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department is known for its professionalism, highly trained personnel, and cost effectiveness. In addition to patrolling the unincorporated areas of Orange County, 12 cities in Orange County contract with the department to serve as those cities' police departments. The department provides security services for many agencies in Orange County including the Orange County Superior Court, John Wayne Airport, Orange County Transportation Authority, Social Services Agency, and Health Care Agency. The department is proud to report that, when polled, 97% of our clients, the residents living in areas that we patrol, feel safe in their homes and communities. In addition, the areas patrolled by the department are statistically the safest in the State when compared to areas of similar population and delivery of service.

  • This summer, if you’ve been enjoying the local beaches, you might have spotted our beach patrol in action! 😎 🚔 🏖️ We recently spent a day with Deputies Borrit-Hansen and Vergilio from Dana Point Police Services for a behind-the-scenes look at a shift with our beach patrol team. Typically, our patrol consists of two deputies equipped with off-road vehicles—a quad and a Can-Am. Their role includes enforcing regulations, maintaining a presence to deter crime, and assisting other agencies like OC Lifeguards or State Parks when needed. Even in the off-season, these versatile vehicles are invaluable since they can access remote locations and trails that regular patrol vehicles can’t reach. Our Beach Patrol will be out until mid-September—have you seen us around?

  • We recently conducted an active shooter drill alongside school resource officers from 12 neighboring agencies. This year marked a milestone as we integrated cutting-edge technology from the Real Time Operations Center (RTOC) into the training. We were honored to have Dr. Stefan Bean, the new Superintendent for Orange County, Board of Education Director of Partnerships Dennis Cole, and RSM City Council Member Jerry Holloway join us as special dignitaries observing the drill. A special thanks to Santa Margarita Catholic High School for allowing us to use their campus and to DOJ UASI - Urban Area Security Initiative for their sponsorship. Together, we're committed to ensuring safety and preparedness in our community.

  • From the first step to the final handoff to Laguna Beach Police Department, we ran with purpose and passion in the Law Enforcement Torch Run. We are proud to be part of a movement that champions acceptance and inclusion for Special Olympics Southern California. This year, we had over 40 members from our department volunteer to run, and 13 of those volunteers ran all 14 miles. Here's a little more about why they run.
