OESC WORKFORCE UPDATE: 27,700 jobs have been added overall in the last 12 months.
Our vision is to implement wealth-generating policies so all Oklahomans can achieve the American dream. To accomplish this, the Governor’s Council for Workforce and Economic Development will coordinate strategic priorities and plans across education, training and economic agencies, increasing alignment of the entire education and training pipeline. Created in 2014, Oklahoma Works aims to facilitate quality employment for workers and improve the availability of highly skilled talent for business and industry. The initiative is a coalition of state agencies, educational institutions, businesses and other partners working together on four main objectives: • Aligning and connecting the education and training pipeline with the needs of the state’s regional economies; • Integrating and using workforce and economic development data to inform policy, track progress and measure success; • Building partnerships between local industry and education at the regional level; and • Optimizing the use of resources and incentives. Governor Kevin Stitt ceremonially signed House Bill 3278, also known as the Graduation Act of 2024, on Tuesday, July 9, 2024. This groundbreaking legislation aims to tackle the workforce shortage facing Oklahoma and the nation by revamping high school graduation requirements to include career-readiness training. The new law offers greater flexibility in high school education, allowing students to take classes that prepare them for their future careers while earning credit hours towards graduation. Developed through collaborative efforts between Representative Rhonda Baker, Senator Adam Pugh, the State Chamber Research Foundation, Oklahoma CareerTech, and school officials across Oklahoma, HB 3278 ensures students are equipped with the skills needed to thrive in the modern workforce. "Oklahoma CareerTech couldn’t be more excited to help students find their career or education goals," Oklahoma CareerTech State Director Brent Haken said. "HB 3278 embodies the true Oklahoma spirit to put students first and focus on education that leads to their success. Such a monumental step could not happen without Representative Baker and Senator Pugh bringing everyone together.” #okcareertech
